When my fiance and I moved from Houston, Texas back to Bay City, Michigan, we were faced with an issue common to most people who move.  What type of TV services are available to us in our new home and which was the best value?  In our rental house, cable didn't seem like a good option.  My fiance's parents live nearby and have had traditional cable longer than either of us have been alive.  Quite simply, we knew it wasn't a good value.  Unreliable quality, poor customer service, high prices.  In other words, bloated.  Once we decided on a dish, we were still faced with a decision.

After reading customer reviews and talking to people with firsthand experience with both Dish Network and Direct TV, Direct TV seemed to be the logical choice.  At the time, summer of 2005, they were similarly priced.  However, we personally knew of people who had horrible customer service and poor quality with Dish Network.  Therefore, we decided to give Direct TV a try.

In setting up our system, we took an untraditional route.  We purchased the dish on-line via E-Bay.  It works wonderfully and we've had no issues.  We then purchased the receivers at Best Buy.  At that time, we had planned on purchasing simply the basic receivers.  However, Best Buy and Direct TV were running a promotion where we could purchase a DVR receiver for $100 and receive a $100 rebate.  At first, I was worried.  I've had bad luck receiving rebates in the past.  Fortunately, we received our rebate in a timely manner and have fallen in love with our DVR.  We can't imagine living without one now!

In the year plus that we've had Direct TV with DVR service, we've only had to have our equipment fixed once, for a modest fee.  They were prompt, friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient, providing with a refund for the days that we did not have service.  Every time that we've had an issue with service or billing, we've been able to work with Direct TV in a sincere attempt to resolve the issues.

DirectTV is really, really terrible. Especially when you order it through Verizon. They advertise it as a package, but when you cancel, you have to cancel separately with each company and each company has its own set of cancellation fees. I cancelled less than a week after I got the service because Verizon couldn't get a phone line or internet cable to work. Still, when I tried to cancel the package, DirectTV wanted to charge $323.00 for a cancellation fee of a service we never used. NEVER use DIRECTTV! They have terrible customer service - all they care about is getting you to sign up so that you are obligated at that point to pay hundreds of dollars even if you cancel because you're dissatisfied with the service they've provided. The worst part is, there's nothing you can do about it - if you don't pay, they'll submit to a collections agency and damage your credit. Unless you take them to small claims court, there's no way to dispute it!

Please stay away from DirectTV! I wish someone had warned me, or that I had researched them thoroughly before signing up. I haven't had to deal with the termination nightmare yet, or moving, but their customer service is THE WORST I've ever encountered. Un-sympathetic, uncaring, rude, almost hostile, and hard to get hold of. I set up auto-pay and they set a specific date (it even showed on my online billing!) but then they took the money out of my account 6 days early, causing NSF charges (over $300), and there is no one you can go to. They gave me a fax number (probably to a warehouse in a cornfield) to send my complaint, but after 6 faxes, still no response. This is one of the most crooked companies I've ever seen. AS I read somewhere else about DirectTV, go with another service. You may get screwed by them, but you won't get raped.

DISH TV has been so awesome. I would look into DISH TV if you haven't.

after two years' poor service with indirect tv, i left, having to pay a termination fee, an additional insult because i had already paid for their receiver + a monthly fee. Anybody who asks me whether to subscribe I say absolutely not

DIRECT TV IS THE WORST EVER. I agree with all the comments, and I called them so many times and I talked to the boss of the supervisors and he ended up hanging up on me.

I hate them to!!! Their concept and programming is good, but the equipment and customer service is total CRAP!! I've had them for 3 years, and haven't gone for more than 3 months at a time without signal loss on the HD side, and I'm talking about HD channels disappearing for 12 hour periods of time. I live in the desert, with nothing blocking the signal. If anyone starts a class action suit against them I'll be the first in line. I really hate DTV.

Not only is their customer service the WORST, but you have to wait 40 minutes to get it. Their stuff is crappy and doesn't work. I've been out of cable for 2 days and all they could say is "check your wires" and "is it on?" I thought I was going to explode. My options (after just 4 months have having the service) is to either buy YET ANOTHER ADDITIONAL SERVICE or pay $80 up front to have someone come and look at my box. How convenient is it that my warranty JUST EXPIRED 3 weeks ago? I hate this company. I wouldn't be surprised if someone finally filed a class action suit against the morons. I'm all for bankrupting the thieves.

When i decided not to pay them they took the money out on my account without letting me know. I dont used direct pay so i guest they log in to my direct tv account and get the money. DIRECT TV is one of the worst experience i encounter in my entire life.

DIRECT TV is the WORST company and WORST service I've ever seen. Its like a nightmare. When i first applied for direct tv they keep on passing me to different people and then when i got our first bill they charge us too much and when i complain i found out that they give me a wrong package deal. DIRECT TV service is very poor. I need to unplug the receiver for 5 to 10 second every 3 weeks or every month to get a better signal if not the tv screen will be only black and blue or you can only hear the sound without the picture screen or it keeps on chopping. If its bad weather no direct tv. Last month for 2 weeks i cant get signal for direct tv. i call direct tv and complain and guest what? they what me to pay them just to give me instruction on how to fix their stupid receiver that cant find a signal. why would i pay to fix their signal problem? When i decided to cancel my direct tv they still want me to pay the 1 whole month even i dont have direct tv for two weeks. When i decided not

Direct TV is horrible, beware of hidden fee's. You cannot move with this service because their satellite cannot pick up a signal in certain areas and you will still have to pay $200 in cancellation fees.

I have to agree with all of the negative comments here about Direct TV. Customer service is terrible, and I have had multiple problems with the equipment. And, every time they replace something, they tack on two more years on my service agreement! I can't wait to get back to cable, but at this rate, it will be in 2020.

Wish I read these posts before I signed up. Hidden charges showed up right at the start. They quoted me at one price and then my bill arrived with almost double the monthly amount. Found out they tacked on premium channels I didn't ask for and then are going to retroactively credit me for 3 months but not til the next few billing cycles. Some kind of "3 months FREE" deal. If I don't cancel after the 3 months, bill stays at the higher rate. Lame.

Lured me in with a monthly price lower than cable-- got me into a 2 year contract. Hooked me into automatic monthly payments. Now I pay completely random amounts of money every month that I cannot stop. One month will be $146, the next will be $78. The monthly fee is only supposed to be $49.99 >< This is beyond rediculous and when I call them to cancle or at least to stop the auto-pay from their site they just put me on hold and never pick up. I wouldn't recommend DirectTV or any sort of major dish or cable company seeing how there seems to be less and less regulations on them and other companies every year (such as insurance, which has now become nothing more than a mandatory money sink that pays nothing back in turn in the event of an accident.) Nothing but a big money trap and a scam.

So DirecTV is awful. I have also read the DishNetwork horror stories. I have Time Warner. Not very good. DVR sucks. I think everybody is too expensive. Oh well.

A little tough to deal with on the phone, but DTV has worked flexibly with me for over 6 years. They offer the NFL Sunday Ticket, which lets me get my home team games now that I have moved. I am seeing a lot of the complaints above, and I have to say that I have had challenges working with Direct TV, on the otherhand, I am sure they have had their challenges working with me. Other than needing to have LONG conversations with them concerning billing issues, the service has been good. They have also been accomodating in compensating me for my frustrations by providing free HBO or Showtime on a trial basis for a month here and there. They have never left me feeling that I have been short changed financially, there are just a handfull of saturday morning's I wish I had back. Over the course of 6+ years, I suppose I would have spent just as much time fighting with Comcast, or getting other services installed or uninstalled.
