Soup is often thought of as a comfort food that helps to chase away colds and sniffles and a way to keep the cold weather at bay during winter. But canned soup is a quick and easy meal that can be prepared in next to no time at any time of year.

I usually prefer to make my own soup so that I can control the ingredients I put into it without having to worry about any additives or preservatives. But I do occasionally buy soup for when I need a quick and easy meal or I need to add soup to a recipe. But when I saw a 538g can of Organic Creamy Tomato Soup by Muir Glen on sale for just 60 cents, I had to grab some. The soup was certified as organic by USDA, but would that make any difference to the taste and texture of the soup or would I be left craving homemade soup?

The product details state that vine-ripened Muir Glen tomatoes are used to make this soup using sweet cream and herbs.

This is the first time I have actually tried organic soup. When I first opened the can and looked at the soup, I wondered whether I was going to be eating carrot or tomato soup, as it looked more orange than it was red. But I did not let that concern me. It was the taste of Organic Creamy Tomato Soup by Muir Glen™ that I was most concerned with. I heated up the soup. There is no need to add water to the soup, as it is not condensed. I then sprinkled some steamed cauliflower florets into the soup for extra texture. I liked the taste of the soup. It was not a smooth, puréed soup, but contained lots of chunks of tomato, which I really liked. But it did taste rather salty.

Each 253g serving of Creamy Tomato Soup by Muir Glen contains 170 calories, 2g saturated fat, 15mg cholesterol, 840mg sodium, 26g carbohydrate, 2g dietary fibre, 16g sugar and 4g protein. It also provides 10% of the daily allowance of Vitamin A, 8% Vitamin C, 10% Calcium, and 7% Iron. This is a low calorie soup, but it is very high in sodium, carbohydrate and sugar and low in fibre. It is not as high in essential vitamins and minerals as I had expected.

I liked the taste of Organic Creamy Tomato Soup by Muir Glen and the generous amount of tomatoes. But it was very salty and lacked a lot of good nutritional content.

Takeaways
  • It cost $0.60 for a 538g can of soup
  • Each 253g of soup contains 170 calories, 2g saturated fat, 840mg sodium and 16g sugar
  • The soup contains generous amount of tomatoes and it tastes creamy, but it is very salty

Thanks for the comments. I agree with you, Jody. That's one of the reasons why I prefer homemade soup. You can control the sodium content. Sophie

Great review... I'm not usually a fan of tomato soup.. it always seems to be too high in sodium.
