The Closer is one of my favorite TV shows though I also know many people who hate it.Before deciding to write this review I read through several of the other AC reviews about this show to see if my opinions were well represented.
One of my main reasons for enjoying this show is that I find it so very funny; hilarious in fact. None of those other reviews I read here on AC touched on this so I began to wonder if part of the writers of this show's aim and intention was indeed to make us Aussies 'crack up'.
The Closer makes me laugh much, much more than most comedy shows that are currently on TV.
Everything about this show screams to me 'send up'. To start with "Deputy Chief Brenda Lee Johnson" (I just love that scrawly accent) is so strange to look at. Her mouth is extra large and accentuated by her bright lipstick. And her whole face seems kinda odd, misformed and strange. Her weird ugliness affords and even lends to her the property of being a transcendental beauty..
Then there is her oh so perfectly 'politically correct' team composed of suitably represented numbers of females and males along with detectives from all ethnic minorities. The fact that these team members are given reign to exercise their particular cultural skills within the dramatic confines of suitable plots is further testimony to the talents of the writers. And I also just love the way she plots, plans, navigates and maneuvers her way through the obstacles that the weaknesses of her peers can so often present.
Who else besides Brenda Lee could visit a fresh crime scene wearing her high heels and a short skirt? And how can someone not laugh at a comment's such as, "I'd know those legs anywhere" in a scene where she was underneath a car with only her legs exposed made by one of her male crew ?
And Deputy Chief Brenda Lee Johnson can get anyone to talk and spill the beans. She gets them all to confess. In fact everyone in the show confesses to everything. She is a Master (or is it mistress) 'button pusher' and I think she well deserves the awe that she inspires in everyone.
Perhaps I have a secret admiration for her.
