How I See the US and Especially Americans, While Never Have Been There

Of course I know what I'm talking about here. I know where the US is on the world map and I watch Oprah and movies. And I've met Americans;( okay that's a lie. I met one once and I talked on the phone with another one once. I was so intrigued by their sexy accent, that I can't even remember what the conversation was about.)

And after all this research I feel that I can give you an opinion about the whole situation.

1. All Americans are rich.

After joining AC this notion is gone. No JR Ewing has joined AC, as far as I know. All I read is about folks working hard and being concerned about the National economical situation.

2. America isn't really that big.

Coming from a smaller country I have no real concept of distances. My mind is telling me it's really big, but my feeling tells me that you all know each other and drink coffee together. Thankfully I have refrained from asking silly questions like: "Oh, You live in New York? Do you know X, he lives in Washington".

3. All American women have long hair.

This is solely based on the Oprah show. Living in a country where at least half of the women have short hair, I can't help thinking how they maintain long hair and have a job. Perhaps Oprah only invites long-haired women on her show.

4. All American women look incredibly good.

I hope that someone will PM me about this; it's holding me back from visiting the US. How can I compete with all those wrinkle-free, botoxed long-haired beauties? I don't want to stand out in such a way that, alarmed by my not-so flawless outside I will be intercepted at the airport on arrival. To be briskly marched off by a burly Customs Officer who will tell me that I am under no circumstances allowed into the country, unless I'll have a complete body overhaul.

5. All Americans have straight and white teeth.

This has mystified me for a long time. And I've come up with two possible answers. The first one is that you have a good medical plan, which includes dental care and orthodontics .Here that is not so; you have to pay for all dental treatment yourself. I am not so much afraid of the physical pain a root canal will give me, but afraid that I have to sell my house to pay for it.

Talk about a humorous read!!! Well, having lived in the US all of my life, I would say that the initial comments in regard to which shows you may want to reference are right on the money!! Most American's that work in any way for a living could also be considered patriotic. While many of our celebrities do sport funny pants, have Botox AND store bought teeth, AND seem to think that us simple folk are ridiculous for our patriocism (Bein's how their so much more 'cultured'). I can't afford new teeth, and I don't desire big, rubber, bouncy boobies that impede my vision, but then again, I am origianally from the Midwest and now live in the South so....I am a redneck. LOL!!! Love your work Miss Mary-Jane!!

This was a fun read. I grew up around American expatriates in the UK, so I had a pretty good idea of what they were like before I actually moved to America. You're spot on when it comes to #7. I have noticed that a lot of Americans do seem to be more patriotic than you would see in Europe. Sophie

You're absolutely right! I'm American and I fit into all of that description. I'm glad the history of our country has not been lost in translation.

Interesting, but not completely accurate :-)

Paul NZ women (and men too) are small and certainly not all slim. I'm probably an exception on all fronts. I kinda stick out.

That's funny, based on my experience so far I' would guess that all New zealand women were incredibly hot blondes with long hair... I wonder how tall they are??

MJ you have done it once again this is a wonderful article. some of what you say is so funny I almost spit coffee on my key board. One thing you got correct is the patriotic part - but white teeth and long hair and wonderful looking women is not quite correct 100% but it's okay. Anytime you want to experience America come on over here and stay with me I will show you some american ways and places that will make you want to live here.

Ha I loved your article, you are very funny. I know that if I sold my house to get my teeth fixed, I wouldn't have enough equity in it to pay for tooth work for me and hubby. It really sucks here for health care now! I love America but I don't love our shitty assed, power hungry government the way it is now. We are slowly sliding down the hill to become socialized here too. Prices are insane, people are losing their houses and jobs and having their homes foreclosed on, it is a sorry assed system now!

You are so funny !..........most people living abroad think that way, I think. I believe you have expressed all of their feelings in an entertaining sort of way. The TV / movie standard of Americans have little to do with reality though. It is all about perfection here in terms of appearance, which can be deceiving ! ... most of the people are far from perfection (in terms of straight teeth and long hair). So, I don't think you should feel threatened to compete in the beauty pageant.

I think Oklahoma is somewhere closer to the Jerry Springer show than Oprah. We are more western here, and yes blue jeans are the normal attire. We are rednecks here, believing in God, guns and America. We also love NASCAR so the West coast and the East coast thinks we are hicks! We are, and we don't care what they think! I have been meaning to look to see where your Country is located. I will do that soon. Thank you for writing this article. (Oh yes, our medium income here is about $40 to $50,000) however living is a lot cheaper here and you can buy a nice home for $120,000 - 1,500 to 2,000 sq. ft. with acres of land! Thats nice. Thanks.

lol! Very cute :D Note to self: If I ever get to Vegas - Pack checked pants. :) For points 4 and 5 I believe switching from Oprah over to a cheaper knock-off such as Springer may solve your concerns. (Is that still on air? Truly don't know) This should leave you feeling better looking, and straighter toothed than ever. This always was the glory of Springer over Oprah. Oprah has high standards :P
