Bar-b-que Grill Turned Planter

Many years ago I had purchased a cast iron grill because it was heavy duty and we love to grill out. They only problems that my husband could find with the grill were that it hadn’t a lid to close so that he could smoke meats when he wanted to. Needless to say my medium size expensive grill was replaced with a grill that had a lid.

I couldn’t let the grill set unused. I decided to turn it into a flower pot. Over the years since its inception of becoming a flower pot, I have tried several different types of plants in it to decide which plants will grow the best in it and what looks the best in this type of plant container.

What we did was drill three holes in the bottom of the grill for drainage, then placed loose rocks along the bottom, and then placed a grate over the rocks so that the dirt would fall through the rocks and block the drain holes. It took approximately a fifty-pound bag of dirt and a twenty-five-pound bag of potting soil to fill the grill so that the plants would show above the sides of the grill.

The legs and handles of the grill were left on so that if I wanted to use it in another area of my yard it would be easier to move without having to empty it before moving. I could also use it in any of my other regular gardens to add height to the garden with different types of flowers.

Every spring I change out the type of plants that I like in this planter. It gives an area of my yard a whole new look with the plants and planter. While this may seem rather crazy to some to use a grill as a planter, it is a rather unique way to reuse an item that would have been thrown away due to lack of use.

During the fall when the plants have died out, I then use silk fall flowers in the planter to add a splash of fall color to the outdoors. Once Thanksgiving has passed, I will then add red and white poinsettas to the planter for an extra touch of Christmas decorating outside.

So if you have an object that you just can't bare to part with like this grill, think about using it as planter container the way I did with the Bar-b-que grill. You may find that this added flair in your gardening may lead you to other extrodinary ideas for gardening.
