How to Install Glass Block Windows

Glass Block Windows are a beautiful option for the summer. You may see these elegant pieces in traditional homes, but glass block windows are making a come back! With glass block windows; there are many options of shapes that you can choose such as rectangle, square. So you want more privacy? Well, new glass block windows are made with a wall called non-loading-bearing which will allow you to get more light without others seeing your entire house. Here are a couple of steps on how to install glass block windows:

Materials:

Caulking guns

Silicone Caulk

Working Gloves

Glass Blocks

Scouring Pad

1 by 2 inches Boards

Sponges

Wood Sealer

Hammers

Trowels

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Install a frame for the blocks by using a 1 by 2 wood board.

2. You will then have to nail the board along the center of the space. This will make sure the front and back are covered by the blocks once they are in place.

3. Since wood buckles very easily, especially in humid conditions, on the wood, apply two coats of sealer. Moisture will not be able to stand a chance against the protection.

4. Allow the sealer to dry

5. Now, it is time to install the mortar. For this procedure, in an L shape, sculpt the panel anchors by bending it. The short end should measure in 3 inches.

6. Nail the leg that is short to the floor in a parallel position. For every third row, an set a new panel anchor.

7. Use plastic spacers to construct a set of row blocks

8. The glass block mortar should then be mixed

9. On the base or sill, you will need to put a layer of mortar on it. You can use a mortar knife to achieve this step. To make sure you are using the right amount, squeeze the tubing until a nice amount comes out. Once you squeeze the mortar out, place a block upon it.

10. Set the spacer in place. You will then slide the glass block in.

11. On the side of the next block, apply a layer of mortar and press firmly into place. You will repeat this process for the entire row. For a perfect look, check to make sure the row is even.

12. Use a trowel to scrape the mortar, which has been squeezed out. With a sponge that is damp, wipe the glass. This should be done before you move on to the next row.
