Types of Infidelity
There are many different causes of infidelity. The reasons can be simple or complicated. If your spouse has an affair it doesn't mean that your marriage is unhappy. In most instances both spouses are responsible for the situation and both need to do the
work necessary to save the marriage. Some of the causes of infidelity are mid life, or pre-midlife crisis, low self esteem, lack of love and attention give to a spouse, anger, boredom, marrying too young, peer pressure, opportunity, disappointment in the marriage and as a way to end a marriage.
No matter what the reason, when one martial partner is unfaithful to the other it causes devastating pain and can end the marriage. Call it whatever you choose, cheating, unfaithfulness, adultery or an affair, it can destroy a marriage and have a major effect on the couple and their children for years to come. It's interesting to note, however that 50% of marriages survive infidelity and some even improve because half the couples that go through infidelity are moved to re-evaluate their marriage and made the changes necessary to improve their relationship. Even though over 60% of relationships may have a cheating spouse during the course of a marriage, only 15% of wives and 25% of husbands admit to cheating.
There are many different types of affairs. Some people are addicted to sex or romance and only a new relationship give them the passion, excitement, sexual highs, romance and even a sense of shame they need. There are also men who believe that having affairs is something they are entitled to because of their gender. They feel little or no guilt and often their behavior is something they learned from their birth families. Some spouses may be driven to cheat because of a fear of aging, real or imagined wrongs done to them by the other spouse, boredom or problems with every day life. In these cases an opportunity must present itself for an affair to take place.
