The infomercial

I don't generally make a habit of watching infomercials.  I did happen to catch one yesterday, though, having awakened early.  Like most other infomercials I've seen, on the one I saw yesterday, there were lots of people giving glowing testimonials about the product being pitched.  My eyes zeroed in on the screen, where a middle aged couple was standing in what looked like a beautiful living room.  Although the living room was impressive, the people were rather plainly dressed.  The man was wearing jeans and a flannel shirt.  The rather well-endowed woman was wearing a t-shirt that was a little too tight for her and old, faded jeans.  They were talking about how much money they had saved furnishing their living room through DirectBuy.

Intrigued, I kept watching as another woman described how she had remodeled and furnished her home at a great bargain, thanks to DirectBuy.  The camera panned around her patio, which was decked out with fancy looking outdoor furnishings.  I could see a body of water in the background, suggesting that this lady lived in a nice neighborhood.  Then the camera showed her dining room, where the lady showed off a lovely table set with fine china and crystal and surrounded by beautiful chairs.

A chirpy blonde woman with perfect white teeth suddenly appeared on the screen.  She explained that DirectBuy is a club that allows ordinary people like you and me to buy furniture, building materials, and household goods and luxury items at wholesale prices.  The spokeswoman kept her voice light and dynamic.  She sounded friendly and energetic and smiled a lot, showing off those gorgeous teeth that probably cost her a fortune.  No doubt about it, I was interested in what she had to say even though I had no desire to join the club, because as I was watching the infomercial, it suddenly occurred to me why the scheme seemed so familiar.

Takeaways
  • DirectBuy uses a "now or never" sales approach to get people to join.
  • DirectBuy memberships are expensive, especially to people who don't want to buy large items.
  • Once you buy a DirectBuy membership, you are stuck with it, even if you're not satisfied.
Did You Know?
Despite it's rather shady image, some people claim that being a member of DirectBuy has been a good experience for them.

Even as you read, this scam, which is nothing more than and a variation of the "Advance Fee Fraud" scheme, is parting yet more of the "something for nothing" crowd from their money. Here's how it works: the potential victim is baited to call for more information after seeing a tempting infomercial and how on the "inside" someone can get better deals or a telephone "tickler" call is made to a potential victim and an informative letter or brochure is sent afterwards inviting them to an open house so they can see for themselves how much others like them have saved and how much they themselves would save, along with some form of an invitation to join. The letter and subsequent follow-up telephone calls promise rich rewards of savings by buying direct from the manufacturer, at cost, with no Mark Up, No Middleman if only they were "members" of this so called highly esteemed and long time in business organisation. Typically, the pitch at the open house includes mention the so called fact t

I also had an appointment for Direct Buy for Friday 14 March 08. Last night my wife told me about her aunts friend, and about her experience with Direct Buys bad tactics. So today I went into work and called and canceled my appointment. After I canceled the appointment I happened to come across your article. I hope that anybody that is about to or thinking about joining reads your article. Thanks

I should have checked out your sight before. We had the hard sell tactic delivered and stupidly bought it! (I was surprised my husband agreed because he usually says, "If I have to give you an answer right now, the answer is NO!") I tried to visit their virtual showroom, but couldn't find the product I was looking for that I had seen in the tour.

If you get a written quote for an item, are they required to honour it? I am a member and now I regret it! Customer service sucks and their famous line "we're getting rid of the middle man" is a lie. They are the middle man and they don;t rpvide "service", they just want your money. Once you walk in, they don't give you the time of day!! And they are making TONS and TONS of money! Disappointed in DirectBuy! Warniing: DirectBuy is a SCAM!

Thank you for the helpful information, I was not comfortable that they don't show any products on line, the fact that they would call me so that I could get a pass to their showroom; I do not give out my phone number that easily. If they want my business they need to open up their doors to my money without a pass.

I wish I had read your comment before, we are a member of direct buy and I feel we were pressured to join, like you mention if you have big money and like expensive stuff it is for you but if you are used to shopping at wal-mart, home depot and target it sure isnt worth it. I wish ther was someway i could get out of the contract. My husband is the one that heard the infomercial and made the appointment. I wish we had never gone in or we should have walked out.

I too want to thank you for putting this information out. I also signed up for an appointment and now will happily cancel it when they call me. Thanks for taking the time to watch out for your fellow man.

Thank you so very much for this information. I had scheduled a visit for next week but now I am going to cancel it. I just thought the company was very busy when my phone calls weren't returned in a quick manner. I guess it did seem to good to be true
