Men Ask: What Do Women Talk About when We're Not Around?Us?

Steve is a bit of a mumbler. I have to work with the guy, but I've learned the value of keywords long before I had a computer, thanks to Steve. Usually I can turn my mind half off, when he's on one of his ramblings. And normally his monologues go like this: "......Coffee.........my wife said.........I said..........the kids...". Leaving my mind to concentrate on more important things.

But this time I was alerted by more interesting words: ".....Women.....talking.........about us men........I like to know..".

"Hold on," I said,"What are you implying here Steve, that if you put two or more women together, without you guys in attendance, we talk about men?" Steve looked crestfallen at that point. "Yes, I'm sure you women do that, and I for one, would like to know how those conversations go".

I leaned back in my chair; this was certainly going to be a very interesting conversation. And since I've been asked that question a couple of times before, I started smiling.

"But you've been married for 30 years, surely you've asked your wife what she talks about with her friends?" "Yes, I did, and she says she talks about nothing". So Steve was after me telling him all sorts of secrets; or rather what he perceived as secrets, reserved for female ears only. Shared by approximately half of the world's population, and leaving the other half to wonder if it was about them. And if so, to what extent did these conversations go.

First of all: Yes, we women do talk a lot more than men. We are not good at keeping everything inside. Most of the experiences, emotions and events need to be shared with someone else. It also has a social aspect; without talking there would be precious little socializing for us. Just sitting around in companionable silence doesn't come naturally for a lot of women.

Hence the question:"What are you thinking about?", directed at a quiet male comes up very often. Only to be answered by :"Nothing".

Some women understand that; some women don't.
