I know that a lot of people think it is silly to equate emotions to animals. It is obvious that they have either never had one or have had the wrong kind. The truth is that animals, in many ways, are better at communicating their thoughts and feelings than are their human companions.

Pepper, my Shih Tzu, has been a part of my life since she was just four weeks old. As far as she knows, I am her mother and she responds to me in that manner. She came into my life just before my mother's Alzheimers set in. I have always felt that it was God's way of offering me some new comfort to replace that which I would never again feel inside my mother's arms.

Today, Pepper continues to take care of me in her own special way. When I'm having one of my migraines, she senses it right away and moves into immediate action.

I'm in pain today and there you are
Right by my side; never leaving me;
Offering me your gentle comfort
And fluttering kisses on my arm.

I know it breaks your heart when I cry
Because I can hear you crying too.
You nuzzle even closer to me
As if to say, Mommy, I am here.

As I run to the bathroom to heave
I know you are there right behind me;
Making certain that I'll be okay;
Reminding me that I'm your whole world.

As I pray for darkness to surround
You creep with care onto the pillow.
And encircle my head so softly
As if that act might take the pain away.

I sense the depth of your love for me
As you lay there not moving a muscle;
Trying with all of your tiny might
To make me feel better once again.

I am not sure that I deserve you.
I feel lucky every single day.
You are such a precious gift from God
My very own guardian angel.

Pets can bring out the best or worst in us depending on the individual. When one has a bond with an animal it is so hard to deal with any event that has brought about harm to the animal.

I used to have a little dachshund who would nuzzle the back of my neck at night. This is a sweet poem. Darling dog.

I totally understand how you feel about your Shih Tzu. My Gizmo has seen me through some bad times too! I posted poetry about him too!

Love it. My dog has been there for me many times when I didn't want people around but still needed comfort and love.

Pepper sounds like a wonderful addition to your family. I can really relate to what you have to say, because I feel the same way about my 2 cats. Jake came into our lives as a 7 week old kitten, not long after my mum's death and he is now almost 4. Samson has been with us just over a year, but between them, these cats are like our children. Beautiful poem and dog! I have a dog and a cat and I agree with you 100% about the emotional connection between animals and their owners.

What a beautiful little sweetheart. You know I have a Shih-Tzu too. She is adorable! I love this poem, and it brought tears to my eyes. I live with excrutiating pain at times, and my animals are there to comfort me. I think they can sense it. I don't know how anyone could ever hurt an animal. They're gifts from God sent to be companions and comfort us through the bad times. They provide unconditional love in the purest form. They know that life is everlasting. Thank you for sharing this beautiful poem and the picture of your little sweetie. She is an little angel in a fur coat. :-)

I totally believe God sends animals to be with us. Twice my mother has been saved from being trapped in a burning building by her dogs. We've had animals show up at our door before a particularly trying time. They are wonderful comfort. Nearly 2 years ago after a hysterectomy and while my crohn's increasingly grew worse my oldest son went to college. My youngest son brought a pup home. I know that "Bear" is the reason I had to get out of bed most days. With one son in high school and very busy and me not feeling well it would have been all too easy to stay in bed mornings. "Beary boy" kept me busy and laughing. God's gift. I am so sorry you have migraines. They are crushing.
