Yes, the world has reached "peak oil." And yes, there are concerns about supply that need to be addressed. And yes, oil prices are higher as a result. But not that high, so to speak. A large part of the high price being paid now is a direct result of market manipulation and Republican policies of nonsense. Regardless of what your favorite right wing mouthpiece might be screeching daily about the need to drill, drill, drill - there is no current supply crisis that justifies the huge price spikes.

Think about this - When there were gas shortages in the 70s there were lines, gas rationing, stations closed for lack of gas, cars and trucks parked because they couldn't get any fuel. Where is any of that now? Can anyone point me to a single sign of shortage, beyond skyrocketing prices? Of course you can't. There is enough supply to meet current needs. Again, not to say that oil production hasn't peaked and supply problems won't manifest themselves. Nor does it diminish the pressing need to move ahead with alternatives to oil, for environmental, supply, and cultural reasons. But supply is not what is behind the huge run ups now.

The blowhard's of the right will say that Democrats are responsible for your high gas prices because they are against drilling in ANWaR and expanding offshore leases. It's a ruse, people. You are being robbed, plain and simple. The oil companies don't need more leases, they need to act on what we have. And I'm sure you've heard the one about refineries. According to the right, no new refineries have been built due to Democrats and environmentalists blocking them. That's a lie, pure and simple. Only one new request for a refinery was put forth between 1975 and 2000, and it was approved. Several requests for expansion and updating of existing refineries were approved also. There could have been more, but oil companies no more want increased capacity than Wal-Mart wants unions.

As for the leases standing unused, Congressman Peter DeFazio, Oregon Democrat, stated the following when speaking about legislation he was introducing.

Even if our inept and corrupt government officials enacted a comprehensive energy policy today, the transition from oil to alternative energy will take many, many years. We are just entering this energy crisis, and I believe few people are really aware of the impending economic devastation which awaits America and the world. There is also the specter of oil war. I do see some positive response to higher energy costs...more people using public transportation, driving less, purchasing more energy efficient gadgets, etc...still, this is going to be a long, rough road and quite an eye opener for this country.

Jeffrey every now and then you must present the other side if for no other reason than to make sure you don't become a crusty old immovable dude who drives his wife crazy. Love you! :)

Three years ago I wrote an article in which I suggested that the real reason for the invasion of Iraq was to manipulate gas prices upward in order to gain public support for opening up the Alaskan Wildlife Refuge. The deluge has begun with the McCain's running mate Charlie Cris welcoming drilling off the coast of Florida. We can know for sure that Crist is McCain's running mate because this decision is political suicide in Florida. Heck, even Jeb Bush had to bite the bullet and reamin steadfast against offshore drilling; must have made for some testy dinners up there in Kennebunkport. Since Alaska has fewer electoral votes than Florida, it's a gimme that the beauty of that state is not as important as lining the pockets of the oil guys in American even more. Man, I hate being right so often about these losers.

Great article, Jeff. Glad you mentioned the environment. The networks report that driving is down significantly from years past and treat that as a bad thing. Gas prices are indeed high, though still nowhere near Europe's. And the less oil we use, the better. It's a shame that it drives up the cost of everything else, including food. But to the extent it takes people off the road for unnecessary trips, I say it's about time. And, of course, more drilling here in the States is not the answer. It'll do nothing for gas prices. Even the neocons admit we won't see a drop in ten years, and even then it'll only reduce our dependence on foreign oil by 3%. Keep writing. It'll eventually sink in for at least some people.

No, that's not even close to true. The money pumping into oil futures is coming from consumers, not from the losses incurred by other traders. You are right, Carol....not everyone gets it>

Economics lessons would teach you that when one speculator gets "obscenely rich" as you put it, that another loses an equal amount. The Republicans are no more honest than the Democrats. A good article, but extremely biased by a left wing view.

This is very insightful, Jeff, but I doubt most Americans get it, even now.
