Gloucester, Massachusetts - In the same week that Jamie Lynn Spears gave birth to a healthy baby daughter in Mississippi, Time Magazine brought attention to another teen pregnancy situation in the seaside town of Gloucester, Massachusetts. Seventeen girls from Gloucester High School in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Pregnancy Pact

The principal of Gloucester High School, Joseph Sullivan told Time Magazine that the school official discovered that "more than half" of the pregnant teen girls had "made a pact to get pregnant and raise their babies together." (Time Magazine)

Of the 17 pregnant girls at Gloucester High School, the are all 16 or younger.

The Gloucester High School Day Care Center

The Gloucester High School has an on-site day care center. The on-site day care center is a double-edged sword for teaching teens about teen pregnancy. While the on-site day care center makes it easier for the teen girls to stay in school and complete their education, it may also encourage the teens to become pregnant.

Having an on-site day care center in the Gloucester High School may make it too easy for the teen girls to decide to become pregnant, or be careless. The on-site daycare center also sets up unrealistic expectations for the teen girls after graduation. Very few employers have on-site day care. Even fewer employers are amenable to the demanding schedules of young mothers or single parents with active toddlers and preschoolers.

Last year only four students were enrolled to use the Gloucester High School day care center, according to the Gloucester Times.

Reactive vs. Preventive

While the Gloucester High School Day Care Center won't be going anywhere soon. the school committee is planning to vote on a more preventive approach to teen pregnancy. Later this summer they will be voting on the idea of providing contraceptives in the schools.

For teens who are trying to become pregnant, the schools may need to go even further and offer more education about teen pregnancy and the real consequences of taking on adult responsibilities at such a young age.

It's sad because parents don't teach their kids about this stuff.... They'll just end up helping the girls financially and they will never learn their lesson....

Gloucester high school is a crazy place---full of overly tough people and perverted teachers. I've spent my high school there and I couldn't wait to get out. The town is crazy as well and the people are mean. Its just the place...

I'm a young mother who was married before I got pregnant, and it sure didnt ruin my life. I'm doing quite well actually. You could be 30 and still struggling to raise a kid and make a living, so it has nothing to do with age, it has to do with the situation your in, and responsibility. I do agree, however, that they shouldnt go making babies when they arent married & in a reliable commited relationship. Its hard enough with a mommy & daddy, nonetheless one parent.

Pam, this article is very informative and well written. I read some of the comments, and I would just like everyone to pray for these girls, and their babies. I hope they help each other and do well. No one can be certain of what really happened there except God. Just keep them in your prayers. Best wishes to them all, as nothing can be done to change where they are now, but we can surely pray for them!!

the height of depravity. Or maybe the depth of it. Oh well, can't say didn't know that man is capable of wickedness beyond measure. I hope these girls learn what's true.

I'm 18 years old i recently graduated from high school.. and i can tell you for a fact that even without a child high school is hard and a lot of work i don't understand why these girls would choose to ruin some of the best years of their life with a screaming infant there has to be something wrong in these girls minds to want a child at 15 I'm 18 and I know i don't want children until I'm 30. this is sickening and what about the guys that did this i hope to god that they step up and be men these girls have truly endangered the guys that are involved and i hope that these guys can deal with being in jail. if it love you need your not going to get it from a child look at the way we often treat our parents we get in arguments with them and tell them we hate them love wont come from your child until they are older and mature. and the guys on this comment board that are turned on by what these girls did you should simply be ashamed for supporting something this disturbing.

Okay, I started my teaching career in Gloucester and I don't think that it's right that people on this board are all judgmental of the society there without experiencing it first hand. It's a weird little spot on the map, beautiful and full of problems - just like most people's towns. If the girls did intentionally get themselves pregnant together, I can understand that. Hang out in any high school today and you will understand herd mentality. I'm sad for them and even worried that I know one or two of them, but my heart breaks for all of them. It's not about pointing fingers and saying, "where were the parents?" or "what about the boys involved?"; it's now about, "What are we going to do for these girls?" or "What caused this and how do we change it?" and "How can we each make difference?" The other problem to face is that Gloucester is not a place where outsiders are loved and accepted; maybe by the other postings on this board, it's understandable why.
