July 4th: Why and How Do We Celebrate Independence Day?

On July 4th 1776, the United States pushed for its independence from Great Britain. Ever since this historical event, the United States reveres this proclamation each year by observing July 4th as a federal holiday. It's a time of celebration for all Americans.

July 4th, also known as "Independence Day", is celebrated with parades, fireworks, barbecues and picnics. Families and friends band together to celebrate this most historical
 event.

A lot of Americans take advantage of July 4th to have a picnic or barbecue with family and/or close friends. Some use the time to go on a much-needed vacation.

Parades are a favored feature of July 4th and are often themed with the colors red, white and blue to show patriotism. The air is charged with excitement as many join in the fun.

During nighttime, the focus is on the amazing fireworks displays throughout the country. Some displays are especially spectacular like those arranged over the Washington Monument.

Local fireworks displays can be seen in most any town and some people have a beautiful display in their own back yard. Fireworks range from small firecrackers to sparklers and those that shoot high in the sky to make a beautiful design. The laws on buying and using fireworks, for personal use, can vary throughout the United States.

Patriotic songs can often be heard at July 4th festivities. Among those songs are "The Star-Spangled Banner", "God Bless America", "This Land is Your Land" and "America the Beautiful".

July 4th is a day of celebration. It's a time of unity and appreciation for independence for all Americans. God bless America!
