Christmas Shopping with the Kids
If you've ever taken your kids shopping during the Christmas season you know how difficult it can be. The kids get restless and bored and you are stressed out trying to find just the right gift for your mother or best friend. Then, you have to spend forever standing on line waiting to pay
while the kids dance around asking you ever five minutes, "Are we going now?"
With a little advanced planning and cooperation on the children's part, a family shopping trip can be fun. There are things you can do to make certain that you have an enjoyable shopping trip. One of those things is to make certain the children are well rested; a tired child is a cranky child. Taking frequent breaks is also important, as is including activities appropriate for children and being ready for any situation.
A lot will depend on the age of the children, but in most cases it's a good idea for them to be well rested before the start of the shopping trip. For children who still take naps every day this is even more important. If you plan on going Christmas shopping with a child young enough to still take daily naps, the best idea is to plan your shopping trip after the child's nap. Doing this will make the shopping trip more enjoyable for you and the child, since the child will have enough energy not to become cranky due to exhaustion. Another possibility is to go shopping before the child's nap, but you should try to see to it are home from the shopping trip before the child's normally scheduled nap time.
Children have short attention spans so it's also wise to take frequent breaks when Christmas shopping with a child. Unlike adults, children are not likely to be able to shop for hours on end without short diversions. There are several types of diversions you could take while shopping with a child; stopping for a small snack is one, treating them to lunch is another. You could also visit a play area in the mall. These breaks will give the child a break from the monotony of shopping and will also help distract the child if they become annoyed with shopping
