You may already have a traditional first aid kit in your home. In fact, everyone should. It probably contains things like over-the-counter pain relievers, bandages, and rubbing alcohol. These are good things to have on hand. However, there are a number of herbal remedies for common injuries that you may want to have on hand, as well. Here are some herbal treatments for common injuries and ailments you may encounter.
Burns
For first degree burns (the burned area is red; there are no blisters and the skin is intact), apply St. John's Wort oil, Lavender essential oil, calendula cream, or aloe gel every hour.
For second degree burns (there is a blister) over a small area of the body, you can do the same thing.
For third degree burns (skin is broken; it may appear black or charred) or second degree burns that cover a large area of the body, you should get to a hospital immediately for treatment.
Broken Bones
For broken bones, of course medical treatment is needed. You can speed healing, however, by taking comfrey leaf tea. Take one teaspoon per cup three times per day until the fracture has healed.
Bruises
Apply witch hazel, arnica lotion or cream, or comfrey ointment. Apply these as soon as bruises begin to appear for best results.
Cuts and Scrapes
If the cut is very deep or gaping, you should seek medical attention. You may need stitches.
Otherwise, clean the area with diluted tincture of calendula, golden seal, echinacea, or myrrh, to prevent infection. Then use witch hazel, St. John's Wort oil, or lavender essential oil as a healing agent as often as needed until the cut heals.
Insect Bites
Dab on lavender essential oil or tea tree oil to relieve irritation and prevent infection. Witch hazel will also sooth itching bites.
Nose Bleeds
If a nose bleed follows a blow to the head, you should seek medical attention.
Otherwise, apply a cold compress of yarrow or witch hazel to the back of the neck.
Splinters
You can draw out splinters using an ointment of marshmallow root and slippery elm.
Sprains
Use witch hazel or arnica lotion to reduce bruising. Drink comfrey leaf tea, one teaspoon per cup three times per day, to speed healing.
