Reminiscing II

No matter what

Another example of my having succumbed to that ailment called 'unconditional love' and perhaps the only other one was my feelings for Richard.

It's a strange thing to look back on a relationship as stormy as this one was. The rollercoaster ride it proved to be, at times strained the limits of sanity. Our love was one of those undead creatures like a vampire, though sometimes more like a brain-eating zombie! It simply wouldn't die! No matter what! And often I resorted to my ever near at hand 'means of escape' as a coping mechanism. Only it didn't make any difference if I made good my get away, because I couldn't stay away! It was kind of like that old Eagles song 'Hotel California'. You know the one where it says; "you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave'. That's the way it was...and at the time, appropriately, we were in California.

In this love affair I was the volatile element. While the object of my affection was for the most part a very grounded force. Grounded but not necessarily reasonable. Grounded, as in stubborn. A bit of a know-it-all, though not altogether without justification. A very good chess player, not that I could be a judge of that, since I don't engage in competitive board games fashioned on war, even if the point of it all is the forward thinking and strategy involved. But since other avid players regarded him as someone it was prestigious to defeat in a match, I came to understand that he must be good.
