With Kentucky Fried Chicken's announcement that the fastfood chain would start using a form of soybean oil to eliminate trans-fat in its fried chicken, it seems the health food craze has reached its peak among the fastfood chains. KFC represents the greasiest of the chains with buckets of fried chicken that seem to be dripping with grease and all too often contain very little chicken meat on the bones.

The company's announcement to begin using what is called a low linolenic soybean oil by a company called Qualisoy has the potential to boost KFC's sales which have slumped in the face of changing appetites attempting to be more body-conscious and healthy.

New attitudes about what we eat even at fastfood restaurants, have definitely changed menus around the nation. The only irony are the price points at which many of these healthy choices rest at.

Most fast food places including McDonald's, Carl's Junior and Burger King have added various salads from grilled chicken caesar salads to mandarin chinese chicken salads in an effort to cator to the whole health food craze. Most of these salads average between $5 and $6. The irony is that while most of these fast food companies are pushing healthy eating and healthy choices, most of the selections from the value menus are the greasy hamburgers and sweet items.

Take McDonald's for example. The fast food company offers a fruit salad, grilled chicken caesar salads and fruit and yogurt parfaits. However, on their dollar menu, only the fruit n yogurt parfait can be purchased for a dollar (the snack size). The rest of the items on the dollar menu include two apple pies, three chocolate chip cookies and a double cheeseburger.

Essentially, the message is that eating healthy requires paying a premium price. The price difference is so much that when placing an order, it make it all the more easy to continue ordering that fattening burger, fries and drink meal for the same price of a salad (that comes with no drink and no side item) rather than fork over the extra few dollars.

Apparently, the whole concept of the value menu doesn't seem to apply to the healthy choices.

Takeaways
  • The new cooking oil used by KFC is called low linolenic soybean oil.
  • The oil is produced by Qualisoy.
  • Qualisoy is anticipating the value of the soybean market to increase by $100 million.
Did You Know?
A majority of the foods listed on McDonald's value menu are greasy hamburgers or sweets that go against the whole salad and fruit craze the fast food chain has been advertising lately.
