Fake flowers have come a long way since the days of the hard plastic type that deserved the name "fake." Now they are referred to as silk flowers, and some are so well designed that you can't tell them from the real thing unless you give them a whiff or feel them. Another added bonus is that the don't wither away like their real counterparts do. Silk flowers stay just as lovely as the day you bought them. Silk flowers can decorate your home in many ways. You can buy a gorgeous vase or basket of an already arranged design, or you can try your hand at making your own arrangements. Buy bundles of flowers, in your choice of colors and flower types, at discount stores. Cut the different varieties apart with a small pair of wire cutters. Arrange the flowers in a decorative vase, just like you would cut flowers.

If you are trying your hand at a basket arrangement, you'll need to buy a block of floral Styrofoam. These blocks are easy to cut or trim to fit the shape of your basket. Fit the floral block into the basket, cut the stems from the fake flowers to the desired length and arrange them in the basket. Add bows or other craft items to the basket for a personal touch.

Small undecorated wreaths are very inexpensive. They come in straw designs, grapevines, or even evergreen for the holidays. Purchase these plain wreaths and add your own flowers and craft themes to them for a creative personal touch. Floral tape will help hide and hold the flower stems, as you twist them onto the wreath.

Candles add a nice touch to your home decor. Surround your candles with a complimenting color of silk flowers for an even more dramatic display. Cut each flower from the bunch. Twist the stems together to form a ring to fit around the candle. Continue adding flowers and twisting the stems together until you get the desired look. Use floral tape to help hold the ring together.

Make sure that the ring of flowers leaves room for the candle to drip into the candle holder instead of on the flowers. Also make sure that no part of the flower display is near the candle flame.

Great ideas... especially lightly spraying them with scented oil. Knowing that, would certainly make me think about adding silk flowers to my decor now :)

I have a large Waterford bowl on my dining room table. Each season, I change the silk flower arrangement to match the season. If you wash the silk flowers (which consists of swishing them in hot soapy water and rinsing) they spring right back. Let them dry well and you can store them away until their season arrives and you can use them for years.

Great tips. Just remember to dust your fake flowers, cause if you're anything like me they'll be covered in dust after six months!

I ,too, like that oil idea. Fake flowers are such a good alternative for dark areas where plants can't live as well as for people who are allergic to regular plants. Nicely written!

What a great idea. Have fake flowers smell like real ones by using essential oil.
