At birth, Nicolas Cage's last name was Coppola. When he got into acting he wanted to change his last name from the legendary Coppola. His uncle is Francis Ford Coppola. Nicolas wanted to distinguish himself as his own individual and wanted no favors because of his family. So, he chose to change his last name to Cage. 

When asked why choose the name Cage, he replied that the name came from the comic book character Luke Cage. Luke Cage was the first black superhero.
