Prescription drugs are expensive. There's no doubt about that. There are things the average consumer can do to save money on prescriptions.

1. Choose generic over brand name.
Generic drugs are much cheaper than their brand name counterparts. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about generic alternatives. Also, be sure to check out Walmart and Target pharmacies. They now offer over 300 generic medications for just $4 each. The list can be found on the pharmacies' websites.

2. Shop around.
Call various pharmacies and ask for the prices of the medication that you need. You can save a great deal of money this way.

3. Contact the manufacturer.
Find out if the drug manufacturer has any programs for low income families or those that do not have prescription insurance.

4. Get samples from your doctor.
Ask your doctor if s/he has any samples of the medication. Most doctors are happy to give these away.
