Rising fuel prices and the economic recession underway are making it difficult or most of us to maintain a comfortable budget and enjoy a stress-free summer. As the national average for gas prices continues to climb with the season's temperatures, more American's are turning to alternative methods of transportation and skipping the usual summer vacations in favor of a 'staycation' this year. Cutting back on trips is one way to offset the costs of rising gas prices, but there is a brighter side to becoming less dependent on the car or truck this season.

Consider these eight benefits next time you find yourself complaining about the extra gas expense this season - and be grateful you're among the 8% of humans around the world that actually owns a car*:

#8 Benefit of Rising Gas Prices: Fewer Teen Drivers on the Road
When inexperienced teenage drivers can't afford a tank of gas, it may mean fewer teens cruising the streets or heading out for a late-night car racing event. Extra income from the part time job may go towards renting home movies, buying clothes online or (gasp) savings deposits to build up funds for a future trip instead.

#7 Benefit of Rising Gas Prices: Finally Losing Some Weight
If you're hitting the bicycle or taking more walks this season, you might be able to burn off a few pounds while you're at it. When you're searching for alternative ways to get from Point A to Point B, an increase in physical activity may be on the agenda more often than not.

#6 Benefit of Rising Gas Prices: Fewer Chances to Eat Out
Cutting back on food from restaurants or fast food in order to save money may be part of your budget strategy, which means fewer chances to blow that diet you promised to stick with over New Year's. Eating out less means you can finally work on your super-chef skills - and possibly try a healthy recipe or two.

Behind every dark cloud is a silver lining. Good things can come from bad things, as you've pointed out here. However, if people don't go out to eat, travel, or go shopping, the economy will continue to suffer and people will get laid off. But I agree that not driving can be a good thing for individuals.

I agree with some of these, especially the appreciation for our environment. The only reason any alternative fuel research is going on in America is high gas prices. They're frustrating right now, but in the long run they might end up being a good thing. Great article!

I love this article's concept. Just wish you would have replaced the somewhat offensive "Fewer Teen Drivers on the Road" with "Less Traffic", which is the #1 to me.

So if we are driving less, the car insurance companies should lower our insurance rates! I'll believe that when that happens!
