Steve Carell's success in Hollywood continues, as the "Office" star scored another #1 hit with the spy comedy "Get Smart." According to numbers released by Box Office Mojo, the remake of the 60's TV show easily out-distanced the competition, earning just over $39 million for the weekend of June 20-22. Get Smart also had the best overall performance per theater, with an average of over $10,000 for the weekend. Last week's #1, The Incredible Hulk, slipped to third with $21.5 million in ticket sales. Despite decent reviews, Hulk's earnings dropped over 60% from last week. Even so, it will easily pass the $100 million mark this week.Kung Fu Panda continues to play strong, bolstered by families taking in the animated comedy. It remained in second place with $21.7 in ticket sales. The LoveGuru opened weakly, with $14 million in earnings and a fourth place finish. That's not a good sign for the Mike Myers comedy, which may have suffered from poor reviews. The Happening slipped to fifth place from last week's #3 opening, and has earned over $50 million overall.
Iron Man became the first movie to cross the $300 million mark, after eight weeks of release. Strong word of mouth continues to propel the comic book film, and should fast-track the already announced sequel. Indiana Jones should be the second film to $300 million, and that may happen this coming weekend.
The Strangers finished tenth with almost $2 million in ticket sales. With an overall gross of $50 million, it is a modest hit compared to other films, but with a production cost of only $10 million, executives at Rogue Pictures should be ecstatic. Narnia finished close behind Strangers, with $1.7 million for the weekend. It will be difficult for the film to reach the $150 million mark.
The top earning movies for the weekend of June 2 - 22 are as follows:
1. Get Smart, $39,155,000 weekend gross, $39,155,000 total gross.
There is no stopping Steve Carell.
2. Kung Fu Panda, $21,700,000 weekend gross, $155,596,000 total gross.
With no other family movie out there, Panda rolls up the bucks.
