Interview with Mike of Haste the Day: It's Not an Elementary School Teacher, but Still Pretty Cool
Embed:
Recently I have been trying to figure out what to do post graduation. Yes, I have applied for a few MFA programs in Creative Writing – but every time I write something on the dry erase board at work I have this amazingly strong pull to get
certified to teach high school. To write things on boards, to explain literature to people who are usually trained to dislike
reading/its evaluation.
I also grapple with ideas of taking PenCapChew glossy and trying my hand at television series
development… but still, put that dry erase marker in my hand and all I want to do is teach high school. If I do, I want to
have an aquarium in my room. Perhaps a little land/water setup (I am so fond of those) and I will name the animals after
literary figures ala my now deceased giant African millipede, Gregor. But all of this is why I decided that I would begin my
interview with Mike by asking him advice on what I should do with the rest of my life.
Now don't get me wrong, I do research before interviews. I read previous interviews so that I ask fresh questions or to
find something I can make fun of them about. I read reviews to try to find something to ask them to respond to. I peruse
bios and websites and end up deciding to instead ask them what I should do with my life. And if they remember the
lyrics to the Fresh Prince theme song.
I recently had the chance to utilize all of these "skills" when I talked with Mike of Haste The Day and after cracking a “that’s
what she said” joke, I was ready to begin.
Melissa: If not this, what would you do?
Mike: I would be an elementary school teacher.
Very good answer.
I love kids, I love teaching, I love education – especially at that level. It would be really fun to be an elementary school
teacher. I just love elementary school and I just want to just.. I just want to set up the classroom calendar. I want to cut
out the construction paper pieces and make the little hearts to put on the 14th of February and make… make the
calendar in the classroom. I just want to be an elementary school teacher.
