They used to be called screwball comedies and represented one of the greatest achievements in the art of Hollywood filmmaking. Today they are known as romantic comedies and the very best of them can't hold a candle to a merely mediocre screwball love story. Of course, that's just my opinion (though shared with anyone who has seen a healthy number of screwball comedies), and you may fully well think that comedic love stories achieved perfection not with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell but with Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock. If so, then the collection of romantic comedies available for instant viewing on Netflix may be enough to convince you to invest in the Roku device so that you can watch them on your television on those months when there is nothing worth watching on TV. And even if you do realize that today's romantic comedies pale in comparison to the screwball comedies of the past, a Roku may still be in your Netflix future. It Happened One Night.
The very first movie to ever win Oscars for Best Picture, Director, Actor and Actress. Kind of amazing when you consider that it was not just a comedy, but a screwball love story. It Happened One Night wasn't the first screwball comedy, but it's amazing success set the template for so many that followed. A cynical mug and a flighty heiress hate each other at first, but slowly fall in love; the route toward matrimony is fraught with a wild collection of quirky figures and outlandish situations. It Happened One Night was also not the best of the lot. Roku this Oscar winner into your Netflix instant viewing queue anyway.
Bringing Up Baby.
Bringing Up Baby is infinitely funnier than It Happened One Night and It Happened One Night is infinitely funnier than any Sandra Bullock romantic comedy...so you do the math. The main reason Bringing Up Baby can Roku like a hurricane from your Netflix instant viewing is because it contains the singular talents of Mr. Cary Grant. It's also got little Katie Hepburn, but don't that stop you, Jack! In a disappointment to Dorothy Parker, Hepburn manages to run the gamut of emotions beyond A to B, getting at least to F or G.
