Virginia, like its neighbor, North Carolina, is one of the most diverse states geographically in the Union. It is basically composed of three regions: the Tidewater, the Piedmont (or central plateau) and the western mountain regions of the Shenandoah Valley and the Southwest Blue Ridge Highlands. These mountainous regions to the west are part of the great Appalachian Mountain Range, the oldest in the United States. It is a beautiful area with marvelous activities like fishing, rafting, hunting, canoeing and snow activities. I have always loved this area of the country for its history and for its warm culture and heritage. This winter would be a great time to take advantage of some of the great ski resort packages and specials for the whole family. Skiing is not just for ski snobs who hang out at Aspen, Vail, Winter Park. The South is packed with some of the finest ski areas in the country, offering a great range of slope difficulties for the beginners to the advanced skiiers. And the region is much more accessible to Southerners or area residents who don’t want to pay for expensive flights to toot off to those stuffier places in the West.
