As a school library media specialist and the mother of a toddler boy, I am always interested in discovering the best books for the occasion for what is going on in the lives of my child and the children around me. Books can be a great way to help prepare kids for their first big trip to the dentist. Here are this librarian's picks for the best books to help prepare your child for a dentist visit.

The Bernstain Bears Visit the Dentist by Stan and Jan Berenstain. I have always been a huge fan of Berenstain Bears books and believe that The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist is a great book for preparing your child for his first dentist visit. Many of the tools and other "scary" parts of a first visit to the dentist are discussed in this book along side the fun and familiar characters of Brother Bear and Sister Bea. Do know that the tooth fairy is discussed in The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist so if your family doesn't plan on using the tooth fairy, this might be one to skip to prepare your child for a dentist visit.

Just Going to the Dentist by Mercer Mayer. Mercer Mayer has written many beloved children's books featuring "Little Critter" and Just Going to the Dentist is another great from this author. Just Going to the Dentist will help to prepare your child for his first dentist visit with fun animals taking on the roles of the patient and dentist. The text of Just Going to the Dentist is simple and appropriate for young children who may be heading to the dentist for the very first time.

Going to the Dentist by Anne Civardi. This book with simple illustrations from a favorite, Usborne Books, also has simple wording appropriate for a child who is of the age to be visiting the dentist for the first time. Going to the Dentist is a good choice for many children who are visiting the dentist for the first time because it goes through many of the steps a child will experience at a first dentist visit. The information in Going to the Dentist is straightforward and deals almost exclusively with what will happen at the dentist office.
