It’s Election Day in many areas across the U.S. Many people are wondering whether the Republicans can hold on to their power base or if the Democrats will stage a come back. In the words of the immortal Rhett Butler in “Gone With the Wind”: “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn!”

I will go on the record right here and say that I am one of those people from the “red” states. Yep, I’m a Republican; or at least I used to be. The real truth is, however, that I don’t feel I owe my allegiance to any party. After all, none of them have done a darn thing for me. Don’t get me wrong, I do realize how lucky I am to live in the greatest country in the world. I honestly still believe that Americans are some of the finest people God ever made. Oops, I said the dreaded “G” word. Guess that spills the beans. I’m also one of those awful Christians. Back to my point, though, I am a Caucasian female Republican Christian. Unfortunately, to a lot of people, that also means I’m the scum of the earth.

I’m not sure when that happened. I cannot put my finger on the moment that we began pointing fingers at one another, saying: “You are always right and you are always wrong.” I don’t exactly know when we began compartmentalizing people. Liberals are good but conservatives are bad. Atheists have a right to freedom of non-religion but Christians don’t have a right to freedom OF religion. Straights are moral and gays are immoral. Who made all these decisions? It wasn’t me and chances are it wasn’t even you. So why do any of us have to support political parties that opt to make rules that we don’t even want?

Takeaways
  • People are wondering who will hold the power base.
  • Divisiveness is destroying the country.
  • No party is blameless.

A well written article and I think to each his own should be everyone's motto but on the other hand I also think that we should all somehow be getting on the same page...not religious wise or even as a 'certian' type of governmental belief (republican, democrat, etc.) but in how we deal with our finances and our people in our country. Even though we have a great country, I think we could be sooo much better! We have more homeless people and drugs trafficking through our country than some other large nations. I tend to disagree with our country being the land of the free cause in all actuality we dont have any thing for free. From the time we are born we have expenses till the day we die, so free, I disagree...how about we start with our crooked finances in the country and getting rid of our drugs and put a minimum wage that everyone can live off of, from single mothers/father to the family with ten kids....okay getting off my soap box...I did like your article though...

You're right that we shouldn't demonize and compartmentalize, but then you do it 3 paragraphs later (tyranny, taxes, not allowed to build a career).

I agree with most everything you rote here. I do disagree with the part about Christians. Our country is made up of more than just Christians. Don't forget that George Bush appealed to Christians in the past two elections as the majority of his voters. They are the ones who helped him get re-elected. I agree with freedom of religion but we need to elect leaders based on the issues, on their competence and not be led by their own personal religious beliefs. Issues first, always. But, back on to what we agree on. I discuss some of the same issues in my article. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/80680/on_the_usa_a_democracy_of_hypocrisy.html Feel free to comment there and post a link to your article.
