Insomnia has set in again, which means that I'm watching a lot of movies trying to get to sleep. Bad for me but good for those who are interested in my movie reviews.Last night I watched the romantic comedy "Definitely, Maybe." It stars Ryan Reynolds, Rachel Weisz, Isla Fisher, Elizabeth Banks, Abigail Breslin, and Kevin Kline.
The movie centers on advertising executive and single father, William Hayes (Reynolds), and his daughter, Maya (Breslin). As the movie opens, Will is being questioned at length by his daughter about his life before marriage and how he and her mother met and fell in love. She is hoping to understand what might have led to their recent divorce.
Will begins with his first serious girlfriend, Emily (Banks), whom he must leave behind in Wisconsin when he temporarily moves to New York to work on Bill Clinton's initial presidential campaign. Things don't work out the way he thought they would and he quickly becomes homesick for his girl; making plans to ask her to marry him.
However, Emily doesn't want to get married; not now and maybe not ever. She even admits to sleeping with Will's roommate in his absence.
Broken hearted and disillusioned, Will strikes up a friendship with a girl named April (Fisher) that he meets while making copies for the campaign. The two remain friends over the years as Will tries to make sense out of his life and finally find true love.
Along the way, he also meets a journalist named Summer (Weisz) and falls for her. But she betrays him just before he plans to propose to her. It is then that he recognizes that he really has strong feelings for April. She, on the other hand, is involved with someone else.
Eventually, fate throws Will back together with his first love, Emily, and the two of them marry; making Maya. Now, on the eve of their divorce, his thoughts turn once more back to April and daughter Maya convinces him to look her up.
How will it all work out? Obviously, I can't tell you that since it would totally spoil the movie. Let's just say that it has more twists and turns than our local roller coaster, The Lochness Monster.
