The Eiffel Tower is an iron tower, and built beside the River Seine in Paris. This tower is the tallest structure that is in Paris and also one of the most recognized symbols in the world. It was named after its special designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel and it is also a premier tourist must see and visit. The Eiffel Tower stands around 1000 ft. high, and it is about 75 stories. It also has a 70 ft. antenna; the structure together is 1070 ft. high which is about 81 stories. The construction in 1889, the tower was the tallest structure keeping its title until 1930, when the Chrysler Building in New York City towered that. The Eiffel Tower is the second highest structure that is in France. With the metal structure of the Eiffel Tower weighs over 10,100 tons. The number of steps to the summit area has varied over history of the tower. In 1889 there were 1710 steps to the summit platform, and after the renovation in the 1980s, there were 1920 steps. Depending on the temperature, the top of the Eiffel Tower may shift away from the sun by up to 3.25 inches, due because of the expansion of the metal on the side that faces the sun.There are three graded tones of paints every seven years to protect the tower from rust. The Eiffel Tower is painted a brownish gray shade. They have used over 40 tons of paint. Only a few people realized that the tower is actually painted in three different colors. The Eiffel Tower was inaugurated on March, 31, 1889 and it opened on May 6th. Around three hundred workers joined 18,038 pieces of the iron that is a pure form of structural iron, using 3½ million rivets, and is a very structural design; it took 2 years to complete. Unlike most structures the Eiffel Tower is an open frame with two platforms. Yet Eiffel took very good care of his workers with guard rails and screens, there was only one man that died, during the installation of the Elevators lifts.
