A basement bathroom does not need to be fancy, it needs to be useful. Think heavy duty when you are thinking of a basement bathroom. A basement is a humid environment and when you are thinking about how to design your basement bathroom think about things you can do to cut down on the moisture. Try to keep cracks and crevices at a minimum since they are places that mildew likes to form.

Choose simple smooth easy to clean fixtures when you are choosing a toilet, sink and tub. You may just need to have a shower in you basement bathroom. A shower will take less space and it can be easier to clean. Smooth plastic walls for the tub and shower area are better then a wall that has cracks or crevices in it since smooth walls are easier to keep clean.

Tiles have crevices so try to stay away from tiles and go for smooth surfaces that are easier to wipe clean. Instead of tiles on the floor lay linoleum on the floor instead. You can even leave the basement bathroom floor cement since it is a basement bathroom. Cement is easy to care for and easy to keep clean.

A basement bathroom can feel claustrophobic so use mirrors in your basement bathroom. Mirrors have the illusion of making an area look larger then it really is. Place a big mirror above the basement bathroom sink and put a floor length mirror in the basement bathroom so it makes the room look bigger and lighter.

For the walls in a basement bathroom consider using vinyl wallpaper or a wall paneling that is made of vinyl so it can be cleaned easy and it will not promote the growth of mold and mildew. You can wash vinyl easily when it needs it while paper and wood walls can promote mold and mildew and can be hard to clean.

A dehumidifier should be a part of your basement bathroom and you should also have a vent that goes directly to the outside to keep the moisture down in a basement bathroom.

Lighting is important in a basement bathroom since most basement bathrooms do not have a window. Add plenty of light to your basement bathroom like a light strip above the mirror will add a lot of light to a basement bathroom. A bright top light that fills the whole bathroom with light is a good idea to have in a basement bathroom.

Excellent points, esp. remembering the environment and choosing suitable materials.
