Grand Cayman is known for two offshore activities - banking and scuba diving. If you are visiting Grand Cayman with your family or on your honeymoon, chances are you didn’t come to bank. So, be sure to take advantage of Grand Cayman’s fabulous scuba diving conditions, including a colorful underwater seascape, plenty of marine life, and near-perfect underwater visibility. Here is what you should know about scuba diving on Grand Cayman. If you are new to scuba diving, no big deal. Don’t miss out on this amazing experience just because you haven’t tried it before. A three-hour resort course is easy and inexpensive. For around $100, you can receive expert instruction on how to use your mask and fins, and how to breathe and move about underwater. The learning experience itself can be quite thrilling, as you see for the first time various types of rare, colorful fish and coral in shallow waters. The transition is much easier than you might think; you’ll be adjusting to life underwater in no time.
If you only plan to scuba dive once on your trip to Grand Cayman, make it happen at Stingray City in the North Sound. Just about all of the dive operators offer scuba trips here, and many claim it is the best twelve-foot dive on the globe. Of course, stingrays have gotten a bad rap lately, and Stingray City didn’t get its name because a lot of friendly dolphins flock here. But, recent events aside, realize that stingray attacks are incredibly rare and hardly ever fatal. That being said, the stingrays at the Stingray Sandbar are so gentle and used to people that you could feed them out of your hand. If you are deathly afraid of stingrays since Steve Irwin’s death, ask your dive operator where you might be able to steer clear of them. But he might just tell you, “On land.”
Dive operators on Grand Cayman are generally experienced and knowledgeable. If you are new to diving, make some plans prior to traveling. This way you will have enough time to learn how to dive and enjoy what you’ve learned on your own. Start the experience early in your trip; don’t save it for the end.
