Stepping is an art form that is popular among minority Greek organizations. When most people think of a fraternity, stepping is one of the first things that come to mind. It's a creative and fun way to showcase you organization. One thing that people don't realize, however, is that being a stepper takes work, tremendous amount of work. In order to be the best that you can be at the art form, hours and hours of time have to be dedicated to make sure that everything is correct. Those blockbuster step routines that you see at homecoming shows across the nation don't appear overnight. If you are a stepper yourself, you probably always want to improve yourself. You probably want to go from good to great. If you want to take your stepping to the next level, here are some tips to keep in mind to help you progress.

Fitness

If you aren't in shape, you won't be able to step well. End of story. Stepping requires a high level of fitness. Most step routines last between 10-12 minutes. You can equate an average step to a sprint. You'll be doing several of those throughout the show. To improve your endurance, try running laps. Or better yet, try sprinting in intervals as well. This will enable you to last longer, as well strengthen your legs. Push-ups and sit-ups should never be left out of the equation. They are simple ways to beef your body up to handle stepping.

Also, the best way for you to improve your fitness is to...step. Perform your steps the way that you want to do them in a show: full out. This will allow you to get accustom to the effort that you'll have to exert in a show.

Perfect Practice

Practice your steps the way that you want to do them in a show. Practicing hard will pay off in the long run. You want to practice your steps to the point where you don't have to think about them. Performing the steps will just happen naturally. This will only come with repetition.

Practice your steps with the intensity that you want to use when you are doing the step for a show. Along with improving endurance, it also allows you to settle into the routine so that it's normal for you for show time.
