Most of us have a pet lover on our holiday gift list, but some of us know a person who is so passionate about preserving animal rights that they refuse to wear leather, eat meat or buy any type of product involved with animal testing. Usually these type of people have as many pets of their own as they can possibly afford to keep! Not only dogs and cats, but all animals are the concern of an animal rights activist.

What can you give to an animal rights activist on your gift list without spending a small fortune? Try one of these suggestions.

1.  Adopt a Zoo Animal
If you have a local zoo, inquire about adopting one of their charges in the name of your gift recipient. Most zoos will allow you to make a donation and pick out the animal of your choice complete with a certificate and periodic updates on their well being. Your animal rights activist will be allowed to visit their adopted animal at the zoo. Don’t have a local zoo? Try a nationally recognized one, such as the San Diego Zoo, which has garnered worldwide acclaim. Most zoos will allow you to adopt an animal at prices beginning at $20.

2.  Animal Shelter Donation
Your local animal shelter will be thrilled to receive a donation in the name of your gift recipient. You can give them a cash donation or needed items such as pet food, blankets, leashes, etc. If you prefer, pile together your preferred items and present it to your gift recipient along with a card explaining they are earmarked for donation to the animal shelter.

3.  Adopt and Endangered Species
On a more global scale, many species of wildlife are endangered and the efforts of organizations such as the World Wildlife foundation benefit from the gift of a monetary donation and most will give you a certificate to present to the gift recipient. Your animal rights activist will be honored to have their name associated with such a worthwhile cause.

Good list on the whole, but no self-respecting AR activist (like me) would want to "adopt" a zoo animals. We're against imprisoning animals in zoos, or supporting zoos financially. I would take that one off my list if I were you.

Cool article. I've been politely suggesting for years that no-kill animal shelter donations would make great presents for me, but no one's taken me up on it yet. You think it would be easier than going to stores and looking around for the perfect thingie to buy. (Don't get me wrong, though--I'd never complain about presents!)
