The League of Gentlemen: Monty Python Meets Alfred Hitchcock in the Most Bizarre Sitcom in TV History

Welcome to Royston Vasey; you may never leave. To suggest that The League of Gentlemen is the weirdest sitcom available on Netflix for either rental or instant viewing on your Roku is to iterate the obvious. The League of Gentlemen is probably the most bizarre
sitcom in the history of man. It is also as addictive as Hillary Briss' special stuff, and if you do watch it via the Roku and Netflix instant viewing option you may just get through all three seasons in a weekend. If all that The League of Gentlemen accomplished was to act as a revolutionary leap forward in the very structure of what makes a sitcom it would have lasting resonance. The real genius of the show goes much deeper than that. And even if you don't get it, you can still enjoy the single largest and most bizarre collection of characters this side of Springfield. Much like The Simpsons, this dazzling array of characters are all created by a shockingly small cast.

Papa Lazarou reminds me of the vampire played by Lon Chaney in 1927's "London After Midnight", but with dark makeup. Take a look at this picture at IMDb.com to see if I'm right: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3041630208/tt0018097. Well, I've never seen this show, but I'm learning about it now. I don't think it's on BBC America as far as I'm aware, which makes the Roku a must to have. The bizarre characters and creative storytelling shouldn't surprise us coming from the U.K. They've always been ten steps ahead of America when it comes to sitcoms and dramas for that matter. Yes, that means America continues to steal from the British to give to the uninformed viewer. Now watch this series probably get copied here in America within the next few years. It's doubtful they'll find three comedians who could do that many characters, though. Seeing the list of characters on the fansite, you'd have to find talent similar to well...Lon Chaney above.

I love Papa Lazarou. A friend of mine whispered to her new husband as soon as the priest pronounced them married: "You're MY wife now." Too funny!

I don't suppose it is really necessary, but since some people a while back thought that Roseanne Barr was Johnny Cash's daughter (Roseanne Cash) you never know: The League of Gentleman has absolutely nothing to do with the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. This will become apparent as you start to enjoy the League of Gentlemen. After all, nobody could possibly have enjoyed the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen...could they?

Extraordinary research and very compelling. I have some memory of knowing about them before but I'm not sure why. Your article really made me want to catch this on my Roku. I hope everyone goes and looks at your lists of top movies for the Roku, too, all done with the same attention to detail and persuasive writing, not to mention extraordinary film knowledge.
