As a soon to be new parent approaching the holidays I already have people asking me “What does the baby want for Christmas?” At first my answer was just to smile and tell them that anything they wanted to get for him would be fine. Then I thought about that and decided that it wasn’t true. All the while in my mind I’m thinking of all the things that “baby doesn’t want” like one more rattle or another blue blanket. Of course we’d be grateful and gracious over every gift, but it got me to thinking about what I would consider the Top Ten Gifts for a New Baby.

1. Diapers I think every parent is with me here. Baby is happy when he is clean and dry and I’m happy every time someone hands me a pack of diapers because that means I can buy more groceries with my grocery money. Think big here too, I’m not talking about just how many diapers (the more the merrier though), but about size. The diapers will not go bad if they sit around for a month or so before baby can wear them. If you want them to be useful right away maybe buy a pack in baby’s current size and then buy the next size up too. You could even make this a deluxe style present by throwing in some wipes, and diaper rash cream. Don’t be afraid to ask the parents what size or brand they like if you don’t know and can’t do a little undercover investigation. Even if you ruin the surprise factor there’s always the anticipation of knowing you’re getting a great gift.

Takeaways
  • Look for gifts and clothes slightly more advanced than baby's actual age.
  • Practical gifts are always welcome.
  • Don't be afraid to buy something a little unusual...aka not another onesie!
Did You Know?
Parents will spend an average of $100 every month for diapers and wipes and if they don't have to spend this one month because of your gift you will be their most favorite person.
