Firearm Review: Hi-Point 995 9mm Carbine

Giving the Hi-point 9mm Carbine a Run for It's Money

The hi-point carbine was originally deveolped during the assault weapons ban of the 90's as a "poor man's" carbine.  Costing only $199 for the entry level version, even those on the most modest budget can afford one.  Made of
inexpensive castings and injection molded plastic for the most part, the 995 is a excellent example of "form follows function".  It is manufactured by Bee Miller Inc. of Dayton, Ohio.  It has garnered a reputation as a handy, dependable carbine for plinking or small game hunting.

Many call it "beatiful ugly" and its distinct profile is different from any other firearm on the market.  It uses the simple direct blowback action operating system for simplicity of manufacture.  Mostly relegated to low-pressure rounds, direct blowback uses the mass of the bolt to keep the action closed until pressure has fallen to a safe level.  The 995 uses a massive breechblock to keep the high pressure 9mm round under control.  It is fed by a single stack, ten round magazine of proprietary design.  This magazine doesn't interchange with any other Hi-point firearm although the 40 S&W version of the carbine shares its magazine with the pistol chambered for the same round.

Of note is the excellent warranty offered on all hi-point firearms.  They carry a no-questions-asked, lifetime guarantee, and I can personnaly vouch for its nature.  Hi-point will repair or replace at its own cost any damaged or worn out firearm of thier manufacture regardless of whether you are the first owner or the tenth.  Any older weapon sent in will have the latest upgraded parts installed for no fee.  The only thing you pay out of pocket is shipping fees and hi-point sends you an extra magazine back to cover that as well.

I got my 995 in 1999. it still shoots great. within 150 yards if I can see it I can hit it with factory sights. with BSA red dot sight I can hit spent 12 guage shells at 50 yards. shoots some ammo better than others but for under $200 you will not find a better gun than the 995. I like it better than my saiga 7.62 for rec shooting and its more accurate out to 150 yards. if you get a chance get one.

The Hi-point carbines are alright, but the handguns are absolute pieces of crap. Don't bother adjusting the trigger pull, just throw the thing away first chance you get. They're actually a danger to operate they're so bad.

Quote: "i dont know i just got a 9mm s&w sigma because everyone i talked to about the hi point said it was crap" Wow, that is the dumbest reason to buy something is because other people don't like something.....follower much? So if I said ford sucks you are gonna own a chevy? what are you, 16?

I have two HiPoint guns, C9 Compact 9mm pistol and the 995 Carbine. Both are fantastic shooters for the money, extremely simple to maintain and clean and both are highly accurate. My C9 has 1700+ rounds thru it so far and it feeds everything I have put into it, including JHP's and my own handloads using 115gr and 124gr LRN's. The 995 has around 500rds thru it and feeds FMJ's, JHP's and LRN's with no problems. If your 995 is having issues with the JHP's you should buff the feed ramp out to a very smooth finish, this takes care of the JHP feeding problem. Or, do as I did and shoot a couple hundred rounds of FMJ's thru it and let things settle in on their own. As far as loading the mags, get a UpLula mag loader from http://www.maglula.com and it only takes about 10 seconds to load a mag once you get the hang of using it. I use the UpLula with my single stack HiPoint mags, S&W 9VE Sigma mags, Taurus PT111 M-Pro and sons RIA 1911 .45acp, and I wont leave home without the UpLula l
