Nancy Pelosi - Madame Speaker, Madame President?
After the Democratic victory for the House of Represenatives, the very first female Speaker of the House is most likely to be Nancy Pelosi. With John Webb likely to win the Virginia senate seat, the democrats will take over the Senate. Whispers of subpeonas regarding events that led America into war with Iraq are beginning to surface in the media and around Washington D.C. With Nancy Pelosi second in line for presidency, right behind Vice President Cheney would she become Madame President?
Critics of the Democratic Party claim when the democrats take over in January, their first agenda will be to impeach President Bush and his staff. It is not known if the democratic House majority will pursue impeachment charges against President Bush and Vice President Cheney, however, Nancy Pelosi has said their will be an investigation into the events that led to the Iraq war. Many democrats are also asking for investigations into the unwarranted wiretaps and the allegations of torture. However, Nancy Pelosi has insisted the democrats are not out for revenge and are willing to work with the President and republicans to find stability and a safer America. With Donald Rumsfield’s resignation November 8, it seems the President Bush is getting the message the American people sent this election 2006.
Nancy Pelosi, amongst other Democrats ran based on a need for a new direction in America, claiming that “staying the course” is not working. Nancy Pelosi says she will not cut spending in Iraq, despite critics’ claim that the democrats will “cut and run”. As Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, insists on “getting the American people ahead”, according to an interview with the CNN’s The Situation Room, which includes creating a strategy for the war in Iraq. Her priorities also include the need for Congress to become fiscally responsible by creating a balanced budget and cut spending.
