What's the Deal with Funny Tagalog Qoutes?
There seems to be a new trend out there in the online and text messaging worlds called tagalong qoutes, particularly funny tagalog quotes. I consider myself an up-to-date kind of person when it comes to these kinds of trends but this one just flies way over my head.
Maybe it is just me but I don't get it and I cannot figure out where it even came from or why it's becoming popular.
The entire "funny tagalog qoutes" trend seems to be based on the language of Tagalog, which is native to parts of the Philippines. According to wikipedia, tagalong is a pretty common language in the Philippines but isn't very well known outside of the country. Apparently the earliest history records of tagalong don't date back past the mid 1500s and they were translated from Spanish. I'm not sure if my facts are one hundred percent correct, it is wikipedia after all, but regardless this is a relatively unknown language here in the United States (I don't know to many Tagalog speakers, do you?) and it's hard to image where it and text messaging crossed paths.
This wouldn't be the first time the United States citizenship took something from another culture and turned it into something completely dissimilar to its original purpose and certainly the United States isn't immune to crazes that were big in other cultures but I've never seen anything like this funny tagalog qoutes fad. It has come out of know where as far as I'm concerned. Someone was talking about it at the store the other day for crying out loud! That's right, some random group of kids hanging out near the store have caught on to this trend; How? I have no idea but they found a way. What's worse is they were in high school which is the perfect breeding ground for these kinds of fads.
