It is a known fact, Babies are expensive. Finances (or lack there of) are a serious shock to parents of all income levels in the first year. But, it is still possible to meet all of your childs needs (and wants) even on the tightest of budgets. Follow these money saving tips:

1. Yard Sales, Hand-me-downs and Consignments:

Babies grow so fast within the first year of life that they almost always grow out of their outfits before they get worn out or stained. Baby equipment is grown out of at almost the same rate. Visit your local yard sales and you will be shocked to how many Mommies are desperate to get rid of their used baby items. It is not unusual to fill grocery bags full of almost new, name brand baby clothes for $1 per bag.

Hand me downs are great if you have older children.  But, they are even better if you have Mommy friends! Your Mommy friends are most likely just as desperate to get rid of their old baby equipment/clothes as the Yard Sale Mommies.

You can also find some great deals at Consignment Shops. You may have to hunt for the bargains here though, baby equipment is almost always inexpensive at these shops. Baby clothes on the other hand may be priced close to retail price, you really have to keep your eye out for a deal. But, consignment shops are great for getting rid of the clothes that your baby grows out of. Most shops will take the clothing in good condition and pay you 40%-50% of their selling price. These shops generally mail checks out a few times a year but, some even let you shop using money on your "account".

*Keep in mind that there are some essential items that you should not accept or purchase secondhand-Cribs manufactured before 1989 and Car Seats of any year/model. Car seats which have been in accidents are not safe to transport your child in.
