Over 50 million Americans are recognized this month during National Caregivers Month. This month focuses on the challenges facing family caregivers. Family caregivers provide an unlimited amount of services such as: assisting with ambulation, assisting with personal hygiene, cooking, medications, doctor appointments, financial help and emotional support everyday around the clock.

National Family Caregivers Month is an opportunity for all caregivers to receive support, education on care giving and celebrating one of the hardest jobs around. You love your parents unconditionally. When you become their care giver, you feel like you have crossed a line and it smeared so you can’t get back across. But that is a big adjustment for both you and your loved one. Here are 10 ways to celebrate National Family Caregivers Month: Offer a few hours of respite time to a family caregiver so they can spend time with friends, or simply relax. If you are the care giver, don’t be afraid to ask for a night out. You just need a little planning.

But you can make it happen. So you don’t feel so guilty, while you are out, pick up some groceries too. Send a card of appreciation or a bouquet of flowers to brighten a care givers day. If possible, call them too. Sometimes they feel alone and isolated. To talk to someone will make them feel better. Encourage local business to offer free services for Family Care Givers through the month of November. Churches and organizations are usually always willing to help. Help a Family Care Giver decorate their homes for the holidays or offer to help address envelopes for holiday cards.

Offer comic relief. Purchase tickets to a comedy club, give a Family Care Giver a funny movie to watch and watch it with them if you can. Or give them a book or tape. Find 12 different photos of the care giver’s family and friends. Have a copy center create a calendar that the family care giver can use to keep track of appointments and events. Offer to prepare Thanksgiving dinner for a care giver’s family in your community so that they can relax and enjoy the holiday.
