Fantasy Best Seller "Rage of Night": Prelude

"Our armies do not exist to make war upon our neighbors, nor to act in times of crisis, nor even to shield our realm against destruction. Rather, on the grim day when our end does come, theirs is the duty to stare into the eye of the dragon, and ensure that as many of our people as possible might survive it."
~
King Androvar Stillson, Year of the Broken Blade

* * * * *

The Thing came from the shadows. It moved faster than the lightning raging through the dark of night. In one blinding instant, like the crash of thunder on the horizon, Darion felt a searing pain tear through him. He saw only a blurred horror swirling past, then darkness, pure and cold.

The world faded into a vista of chaos. The creature that had landed his deathblow, irrelevant. His life had ended long ago. Death was just a formality, now.

Reverie had rarely appealed to him, but in the brief eternity of that moment, as Darion felt the spark of his life wane, his mind turned inward. All that remained to him was there, in memory, now.

Once, he'd loved life. Sweet days of passion, now turned to dust. He lived them again, inside his dying mind.

It was the crystalline memory of all that had been taken from him, forever etched into his consciousness, that had driven him. He remembered those last days, years ago. Before the end came. Before Vengeance had claimed him.

Through all the years between this moment and that, the veil of time parted like shimmering curtains of mist and laid bare the pristine memory of the day his joy had been stripped away from him. It was unchanged by time, frozen forever, just as it was. Just as it had been.

She had begged him to stay out of the war, to keep her safe, to keep the children safe. He had done as she'd asked, but they came for him anyway. He had failed.

She was his world, and now She was gone. Because of him.

The hand on the blade had not been his, but he had killed her just the same. It was HE who had damned her, and damned himself. For the first time in ages, regret consumed him.
