Regarding the longstanding controversy over whether or not pot should be legalized, let’s refer to the same old tired, repetitive arguments.

Anti-legalization
1. If pot were legal, it would open the door for more users, saying ‘it’s ok to use’.
2. Pot is a gateway drug.
3. There are cancer-causing chemicals in marijuana.
4. Marijuana is a drug. It is addicting, it damages motivation, brain cells, causes memory loss…

Here, my list will end, for I haven’t heard many other arguments. Perhaps I haven’t talked to the right people but I will say this. In my ‘active pot smoking days’, I was motivated to write a book, titled ‘Legal Eyes’, and composed of interviews with a number of ‘respectable’ citizens (lawyers, doctors, police officers, even some government officials) stating their opinion on the whole legalizing pot issue.

This project was abandoned due to frustration that although nearly everyone supported the legalization of marijuana, it was always off the record. Nobody wanted to risk their reputation, it wasn’t worth it. I didn’t hear many reasons at all why pot should stay illegal, yet I did hear many of the same things regarding the pro-legalization.

Pro-legalization
1. As far as ‘opening the door’, a shockingly small number of people would be affected. If they have never tried pot, they wouldn’t try it just because it was legal. (Apparently, the legal status has no part in a person’s decision to try smoking pot.)

Marijuana is already decriminalized in New York and several other states. Getting caught with weed is like getting a parking ticket. You go to court, pay a fine, and you're done. Alcohol is a far worse drug than marijiana, yet it's perfectly legal for anyone over the age of 21 to consume. Nicotine is a highly addicting drug and cigarettes will kill you, but if you're over 18 (in NY, 19 in NJ) you're allowed to purchase and use them. I've always hated the idea that weed is a "gateway drug". I know people who smoke weed and do no other drugs and have been this way for years. I know people who skipped right over weed and started on things like crystal meth. Most of the arguments I've heard against weed are bogus. If the government could tax marijuana the way it taxes cigarettes and gas, everyone would suddenly have a new mindset. Good article, thanks for the read.
