Autism is present at birth, but often the symptoms of the condition may be hard to distinguish during
early childhood. However, the symptoms of autism are usually showing up by the time the child is
3 years of age. Some of those symptoms are:

1. Substantial delays in nonverbal communication skills, such as avoiding making eye contact and
facial expressions. Such as the child having no interest in playing games like peekaboo.
2. Shows no interest in making friends with children of the same age.
3. Delay in language, slow to speak, or inability to talk. It has been reported that as many as 50%
of children with autism never learn to talk.
4. Does not react to their name and may seem at times to be deaf.
5. Stereotypical and repetitious language, the official name is echolalia. Individuals with autism often
parrot what they hear or what has been said to them.
6. Absorption with specific subjects. Such as an older child could be obsessed by trains, certain
cartoons or maybe special holidays.
7. Hypersensitivity to sound and extraordinarily sensitive to sensations. A child with autism can have
unusual reactions to the way things may sound, taste, smell, look, or feel.
8. Highly inflexible, demands sameness and a need for routines. Such as a child with autism may have
trouble adapting when there is a routine change at school.
9. Can excessively center attention on particular objects and also tends to lines things up.
10. Repetitive movements which can include hand flapping, rocking and hair twirling.
11. Savant abilities - This is very uncommon ability and only occurs in a small percentage of people
who are diagnosed with autism, autistic individuals who have these unusual abilities are often gifted in
art, music, math or other areas.
