Venus and Serena Williams have been two of the biggest faces in women's tennis for many years. Even as Venus and Serena Williams have both faced various slumps and family tragedies, the two have consistently risen up to win major championships. But the Williams sisters biggest buzz usually comes from when they face each other from Grand Slam championships. The Williams sisters had matched up six times in Grand Slam title matches, with Serena Williams winning the last five of them. But as the Williams sisters faced off in the 2008 Wimbledon woman's final, Venus and Serena Williams's latest championship match ended much better than usual for Venus. With a 7-5, 6-4 win, Venus Williams won her fifth overall Wimbledon championship, as Serena Williams was denied her third Wimbledon title. The seventh seeded Venus also won her seventh Grand Slam singles title, leaving the sixth seeded Serena stuck at eight.
In the first set of the Wimbledon final, Serena jumped out to the early lead at 4-2, winning the first 10 of 11 points. However, Venus rallied back to win five of the next six games, breaking Serena's serve to finish the set. This gave Serena her first lost set at Wimbledon this year. With the 7-5 first set win, Venus was left with the advantage to begin the second set.
The Williams sisters held serve in the first two games of the second set, then engaged in a marathon for the third game. Lasting almost 15 minutes, the Williams sisters drew to seven deuces in the third game, until Serena finally won the game to go up 2-1 in the set, with the advantage.
However, Venus rallied to win the next game and regain the advantage. The Williams sisters then each held serve until Venus went up 5-4, with Serena serving. Venus was then able to break Serena's serve and finish off the victory.
This is the 16'th time the Williams sisters have played each other in their careers, with both Venus and Serena now winning eight times each.
