How to Make Evening Gloves of Any Length
A Guide for Making Formal Gloves
Ooh, la la, what's sexier than lace gloves with fabulous lingerie? Have you priced evening gloves, though? Wow! They're more expensive than the lingerie itself! Forget that! Make your own. It's much easier than people think to make wrist length, mid length or full length gloves. Whether you wear them with lingerie, or out on the town for a special night, the gloves will add elegance to your ensemble.Stretch lace is perfect for making evening gloves but you can also use other stretchy fabrics. It's important that the fabric not fray and does not have sequin or other obstructions. While sewing sequined fabric, the needle can become gummed up with adhesive, causing various stitching problems. If sewing sequined fabric clean the needle frequently with cotton balls dampened with rubbing alcohol. The alcohol will prevent build up of adhesive on the needle.
Fold fabric with right sides together. Lay your hand or arm on the fabric, diagonally. The diagonal cut will allow the fabric to stretch both ways so you'll get a better fit from the glove. Spread your fingers apart and draw around your hand. For wrist length gloves draw to the wrist on both sides then cut the lace two inches longer than that. For mid size gloves draw halfway up the arm, and for full length gloves, draw to the elbow area and add an inch for hemming.
Stitch around the gloves starting with the hem area and working your way around the thumb and fingers. Make small slits in the fabric, at the rounded part of each finger, and you'll have a much easier time rounding them perfectly. The cuts should be from the edge of the fabric to just near the stitching.
When you reach the wrist area on the opposite side, stop. If you're making wrist gloves you'll stop just after passing the thumb or pinky finger area. Stopping before reaching the end will leave the glove open more allowing you to hem the glove easier. Fold and stitch the hem.
