Life as a Wal-Mart Employee

The other day I was poking around the Associated Content forums and I don’t remember what the topic was but I brought up the fact that I once worked at Wal-mart and I thought, “Hey, there’s a topic I can write about!” So I thought I would share with you my
experiences with Wal-Mart. That’s right I’m going places Geraldo would never dare to go.

I was half scared to get a job at wal-mart after some of the stuff I heard online. Stories of being locked in if you worked night shift and not getting out no matter what, poor pay, horrible bosses, having to be black to work, the "tough work" and long hours with no respect...all I can say is after a few weeks of working for wal-mart I've gotta say your all full of it, lol. I worked at a stone shop working sometimes 10 hour days or worse, with 2 paid 15 min. breaks and 1 45 min. unpaid lunch, and a hourly pay of $9.25. WALMART...yes the dreaded walmart is starting me out at $10.00 an hr with 2 15 min. paid breaks and a hour long lunch just to stock boxes of food :O...(thats horrible :P) Looking more into these "horrible people" I gotta say I can't see the evil. They offer a insurance plan starting at $9.99 a week, a 401k plan, they pay $.15 to the dollar for stocks up to the first $1,800 dollars, you get a 10% OFF card for walmart products, 10% off for glasses or eyewear, the

I'm tired of hearing all the poor employees cry and whine about their jobs, lack of pay lack of benefits, whaaaaaa cry me a river. get an education, get a better job. Walmart does not force you to work there, get off your lazy hind end and find another job.

Get a Degree and maybe you can be a manager too! That little kid you are referring to has one. Wal-Mart is only starting to hire managers with a education past highschool. If you dont like it there quit no one makes you work there. Still a free country.

at our store you just have to kiss but and be the managers pet and youll make great money and get promoted before some one thats more qualified than you and by the way it helps if your black our store is a very prejudiced and discrimination store and if you are full time and have more than 5 years in its just a matter of time wal mart only wants parttimers now that way they dont have to pay beneifets or any thing else its all about the money so puker up get black and youll be moving up the ladder and making big bucks.

I am a Ive worked for Walmar for 15 years. Not because I want to, but because I have no choice. At least, not a viable one. I'm a single parent raising three children. We live in a small town (pop. less than 5000). There is no other place to work, unless it's fast food. You can't support a family on Mc Donalds wages. You keep your head down, and your mouth shut, or you lose your job. It's that simple. I'd get fired for posting this if they knew. Oh, that's not what the green "exit" papers would say (Walmart's version of a pink slip is green, for the uninitiated). Walmart management is trained in the fine art of firing someone legally. They set you up. But trust me, they'd fire me nonetheless. I have been on every shift in the store, and most positions. Every shift blames everyone else. Dept managers blame stockers, stockers blame zoners, zoners blame unloaders, and everyone blames cashiers. It doesn't matter where you are, it's a Walmart thing.

Unloaders do more than get carts. Unloader carry the boxes out of the trucks and to a pallet. Sometimes these boxes weight over 100lbs and you gotta carry it 20+ feet. Not to mention two trucks often show up with upto 4,000+ pieces. During Holidays it can be 6,000+ pieces. By the end of the day your feet hurt bad, your back is sore and sometimes your knees are going out form lifting too much, carrying too much and pulling heavey pallet loads like dog food backs out onto the sales floor a football field away. I don't know how it compares to utility work, but it's an insult to unloaders to say they haven't done hard work and mention cart pushing, which unloaders rarely do.

I'm an I.C.S. Associate and could almost swear it was like I wrote this article. I know exactly what you are talking about. My Asst. Manager is a complete idiot. We have 5 total unloaders, never all of them working the same night. (Mind you, we are supposed to have 7 working at a time). We get told what our first project is when we walk in the door. Then two hours into our shift, we are told we have to start unloading the trucks before the unloaders actually clock in. Then we get chewed out because we didn't get nothing done on the floor. My Assist manager needs to stop hiring for ICS and start hiring unloaders... grrr.
