There is Gold in Them Thar NC Hills!
North Carolina quietly has a nice little mining history in the United States, and mining is still done today. According to Goldmaps.com the first documented Gold find in the United States, happened at Reeds Gold Mine in North Carolina. And to this day Gold and Gem Mining is popular in NC. So I have compiled a list of places in North Carolina where you can still go and mine for gold.Reed Gold Mine in Midland North Carolina, can be reached at 704-721-GOLD. This is the place mentioned above in the opening paragraph, They have a visitors center and show a video to those interested. In addition they also have many things of a historical interest including the mine it self. And you can do some panning and make your own strike. $2.00 a pan or $1.50 for a group rate on panning is the charge.
Thermal City Gold Mine is located near Highway 221 between Marion and Rutherfordton and can be called at 828-286-3016. Thermal City has been operating since 1992, and offer both gem and gold mining. They are open from March 1st to November 30th each year. They have an added bonus of offering riverside camping as well as their mining services.
The Lucky Strike Gold and Gem Mine is in Marion North Carolina, and also offer camping. They have Gem cutting now to go with their gold and gem mining. Panning or using a sluice box it is your choice.
Cotton patch Gold Mine and Campground is in Stanley County and close to the city of New London. They of course have camping and trails to walk. But they also offer radio communication so you can keep in touch while out hiking. They are closed to mining on Mon and Tues unless you make arrangements for a group to be there. They even have a 10% discount for members of Gold Prospectors Association of America.
Jim's Gems and Gold is located in Aberdeen North Carolina (near Raleigh) has gem mining and gold panning as well as custom made jewelry and a gift shop. You can buy rough gemstones and mining supplies there as well. What I really like about Jim's Gems and Gold is that they offer a 10% discount to our military people.

I live near Cotton Patch and Reeds. Reed were getting their ore from Cotton Patch up till a couple years ago when there was a different owner. I heard today that you can buy 1 pan of ore at Reeds for panning.

There is a new owner at Cotton patch and they are now open 7 days a week 9am-5pm. The new owner has since opened 2 for which to dig ore. They have a trommel as well as, sluicing, panning, magic wheel gold recovery systems, and gem ore. I have been there a couple times so fsr this year with satisfactory results.
That is a pretty good price.

Absolutely. At the Cotton patch, and I am sure it is pretty much the same at the other mines - except for the price structure -you pay $12.00 for the first batch of 5 pails of gravel. After the initial purchase each group of 5 pails is $10.00. Any and all gold found is yours to keep. They even provivde speciman bottles to put your gold in.
