As the daughter of an art teacher, I was always thrilled when my mother would come home from school around Christmas Break.  (That's what we called it back then... I think it's just called a generic "Winter Break" now.)  Mom would come in, arms laden with gifts from her students.  Some of them were awesome while others, well... Let's just say that we've got a section in the basement filled with presents of Christmases past that her students gave her.

Why waste your money on gifts that teachers aren't going to use? Take it from me, the art teacher's kid, and find something on this list that is perfect for a teacher of any grade.  Like Dave Letterman, I will start with the 10th most popular item and bring it all the way up to number one.

10) STOP & SMELL THE FLOWERS
Believe it or not, a bouquet of flowers makes a terrific gift for a female teacher.  If it is a winter-themed bouquet, she can use it as a centerpiece on her holiday table.  Get a basket of flowers or a pretty potted plant.  Cut bouquets wrapped in paper won't last long - especially if they have to make it through the school day and the commute home.

9) FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD
Yes, food makes a great gift- especialyl for a teacher.  Now, I'm not talking about a gift card to Applebee's or the like.  I'm talking about homemade chocolate chip cookies wrapped in a nice tin, or a special pie wrapped in colorful celophane.  The best thing about this gift is that it isn't expensive - and it really comes from the heart.  Plus, it is something that the teacher and her (or his) whole family can enjoy.  Not a good baker or a cook? Not a problem! Head down to the local bakery and get some fresh cookies from there. They can always create a nice arrangement for you.
