Irish pubs are everywhere in America, but often, the only thing Irish is the name on the door, and the inside is just a typical sports bar. It can be hard to find a real, traditional authentic Irish pub without traveling all the way to Ireland. Luckily, I found two on a recent visit to Raleigh, North Carolina, that seem as if they were plucked from Ireland itself.

If you've never had the pleasure of being inside a traditional Irish pub, than you might be surprised to find out that it's more than just Guinness on tap and a bunch of big screen televisions on the walls. An authentic Irish pub has a culture and atmosphere all its own, from the beer, to the music, to the food, and the clientele.

Tir Na Nog
Tir Na Nog, located in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, is a large Irish pub and restaurant featuring all of the above plus loads of Irish-themed entertainment. As you enter Tir Na Nog, you'll find yourself transported from Raleigh, North Carolina, to somewhere in the green hills of Ireland. Quite large, yet equally as cozy, the pub is outfitted with sturdy tables, old wood, a massive fireplace, lanterns and candles, stone wall partitions, and even a traditional Irish thatched cottage where special events can be held.

The food offered at Tir Na Nog is traditional Irish fare blended with an upscale gourmet kick, and the Fish and Chips platter contained the freshest Tilapia I'd ever tasted. An impressive beer menu also accompanies the enticing dinner and lunch menus, as well as a whiskey menu featuring many Irish whiskies you don't normally find in the US.

As for entertainment, Tir Na Nog does not disappoint. A large stage is permanently in place for hosting many local bands, Irish and Celtic bands, Irish dancing and traditional Irish music. The Irish pub also offers plenty of daily specials, such as Whiskey and Wine Wednesdays, and Sunday Brunch Buffets.
