Herbal Treatments for Crohn's Disease

There are varied herbal treatments for Crohn's Disease which is also called IBD or inflammatory bowel disease. All herbal treatments are alternatives to the conventional treatment of the disease and careful consideration should be taken before employing an alternative treatment. One should continue the conventional treatment while also trying an alternative treatment. It would also be wise to consult a professional herbalist or naturopathic doctor and your regular physician.

Crohn's Disease affects the lining of the intestine, usually the lower part of the small intestine with symptoms of pain and diarrhea. This is an over-simplification of course for the purposes of this article which is merely to look at different suggested herbal treatments in which the seed, stem, flower, root, bark or leaf of an herb is manufactured for the relief of the disease.

A naturopathic approach would be to take fresh Garlic and Slippery Elm. Slippery Elm is readily available at any health food store. In order to facilitate the treatment, one should fast the day before the treatment and during the treatment except for water and medications. This weakens the pathogenic bacteria. The Garlic then destroys some of the bacteria. Taking the Slippery Elm supports the growth of the "good" bacteria which we need in the bowel. Following this treatment for a few months may give some relief.

Another herbal treatment that claims to heal the irritated lining of the bowel in 12 weeks if taken for 3 months would be to take 1 dessert spoon of Slippery Elm Powder mixed with yoghurt, mashed banana or cold chamomile tea. Then take another mixture of Agrimony, Chamomile, Slippery Elm, Rhubarb, Olive, Echinacea, Marshmallow and Dandelion with the Bach Flower Remedies Impatiens, Willow, Agrimony and Wild Oat to be taken at a dose rate of 20 drops three times daily in a cup of cold chamomile tea.
